Article Synopsis
  • Fungi are classified into four Risk Groups based on their potential to harm humans, with Risk Group 3 indicating significant dangers, including fatalities.
  • This review highlights dangerous fungi like Blastomyces dermatitidis and Cladophialophora bantiana, which are known for severe health impacts and high mortality rates due to laboratory-acquired infections.
  • Strict biosafety measures are essential in labs handling these fungi due to their associated risks and documented cases of infections and deaths.

May 2024

Regulatory, Operations and Emergency Management Branch, Public Health Agency of Canada, Ottawa, ON.

Background: When the Public Health Agency of Canada's and came into force, the reporting of laboratory incidents to the Laboratory Incident Notification Canada (LINC) surveillance system became mandatory. This report summarizes the laboratory exposure and non-exposure data reported from 2016 to 2022, with a particular focus on factors that are not typically presented in LINC's annual report.

Methods: Reported laboratory incidents from 2016 to 2022 were analyzed.

The genomic diversity across strains of a species forms the genetic basis for differences in their behavior. A large-scale assessment of sequence variation has been made possible by the growing availability of strain-specific whole-genome sequences (WGS) and with the advent of large-scale databases of laboratory-acquired mutations. We define the "alleleome" through a genome-scale assessment of amino acid (AA) sequence diversity in open reading frames across 2,661 WGS from wild-type strains.

Objectives: To assess aerosol formation during processing of model samples in a simulated real-world laboratory setting, then apply these findings to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to assess the risk of infection to laboratory operators.

Design: This study assessed aerosol formation when using cobas e analyzers only and in an end-to-end laboratory workflow. Recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was used as a surrogate marker for infectious SARS-CoV-2 viral particles.

The recent global outbreaks of epidemics and pandemics have shown us that we are severely under-prepared to cope with infectious agents. Exposure to infectious agents present in biofluids (, blood, saliva, urine ) poses a severe risk to clinical laboratory personnel and healthcare workers, resulting in hundreds of millions of hospital-acquired and laboratory-acquired infections annually. Novel technologies that can minimize human exposure through remote and automated handling of infectious biofluids will mitigate such risk.
