Data on the genetic structure of tree and shrub populations on the continental scale have accumulated dramatically over the past decade. However, our ability to make inferences on the impact of the last ice age still depends crucially on the availability of informative palaeoecological data. This is well illustrated by the results from a recent project, during which new pollen fossil maps were established and the variation in chloroplast DNA was studied in 22 European species of trees and shrubs. Species exhibit very different levels of genetic variation between and within populations, and obviously went through very different histories after Ice Ages. However, when palaeoecological data are non-informative, inferences on past history are difficult to draw from entirely genetic data. On the other hand, as illustrated by a study in ponderosa pine, when we can infer the species' history with some certainty, coalescent simulations can be used and new hypotheses can be tested.

Impact of civil war on the land cover in Myanmar.

Environ Monit Assess

January 2025

College of Geoscience and Surveying Engineering, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Beijing, China.

Exploring the response relationship between civil war, population and land cover change is of great practical significance for social stability in Myanmar. However, the ongoing civil war in Myanmar hinders direct understanding of the situation on the ground, which in turn limits detailed study of the intricate relationship between the dynamics of the civil war and its impact on population and land. Therefore, this paper explores the response relationship between civil war conflict and population and land cover change in Myanmar from 2010 to 2020 from the perspective of remote sensing using the land cover data we produced, the open spatial demographics data, and the armed conflict location and event data project.

Lightweight and robust self-powered wearable devices are of great importance in rehabilitation and medical assistance, but this places greater demands on the development of functional materials. In particular, a balance between reducing the weight of materials and enhancing their mechanical performance is urgently needed. Here, this study reports a design strategy based on a cross-scale strengthening mechanism, which endows triboelectric materials with mechanically robust properties, and can withstand more than 16,600 times its weight without any deformation.

Globally scalable glacier mapping by deep learning matches expert delineation accuracy.

Nat Commun

Department of Earth Observation Science, Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente, Overijssel, The Netherlands.

Accurate global glacier mapping is critical for understanding climate change impacts. Despite its importance, automated glacier mapping at a global scale remains largely unexplored. Here we address this gap and propose Glacier-VisionTransformer-U-Net (GlaViTU), a convolutional-transformer deep learning model, and five strategies for multitemporal global-scale glacier mapping using open satellite imagery.

Objective: Fist fighting among hockey players is thought to have long-term impacts on health. Because of methodological concerns of previous studies, we undertook a retrospective cohort study among retired National Hockey League (NHL) players to estimate rates of all-cause mortality according to the cumulative number of fights in their careers.

Methods: The cohort comprised male hockey players, excluding goaltenders, who played in the NHL from 1967 to 2022.
