Casein has been pyrolysed to obtain a biochar (28.3% yield), with mostly meso- and macro-pore structure, and a liquid tar product of high yield (37.5%) with the balance as gas (20.9%) and water (13.3%). The elemental composition of the casein tar was: C 66.7%, H 8.3%, N 12.1% and O 12.9% (by difference). The tar sample has been characterised by mass spectrometry, gas chromatography (GC)/MS and heated-probe MS, to give molecular mass distributions for comparison with molecular mass ranges indicated by analytical-scale size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). The tar appeared to be completely soluble in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), the solvent used for SEC. It appeared to consist mostly of lower molecular mass fractions with elution times at 18-26 min. GC/MS analysis showed the presence of both aliphatic and aromatic nitrogen-containing components. Neither GC/MS nor heated-probe MS were able to detect more than about half the tar components.

Multiple physiological traits correlates with lifespan, being unclear both the causal connection among them and with the process of ageing. In this paper, we show that six traits (such as metabolic rate, mass, heart rate, etc) acting at the system level, are all related to lifespan thru the existence of an approximately constant number of respiration cycles in a lifespan ([Formula: see text]), therefore, we find that those relationships are not independently related to ageing. In addition, we study if the approximately constant [Formula: see text] is possibly linked with the end-of-lifespan somatic mutation burden, another number recently found to be approximately constant (Cagan, Nature 604:517-524, 2022).

Inoculation of Bothrops jararaca snake venom (BjV) induces thrombocytopenia in humans and various animal species. Although several BjV toxins acting on hemostasis have been well characterized in vitro, it is not known which one is responsible for inducing thrombocytopenia in vivo. In previous studies, we showed that BjV incubated with metalloproteinase or serine proteinase inhibitors and/or anti-botrocetin antibodies still induced thrombocytopenia in rats and mice.

A highly effective method for creating a supramolecular metallogel of Ni(II) ions (NiA-TA) has been developed in our work. This approach uses benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid as a low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) in DMF solvent. Rheological studies assessed the mechanical properties of the Ni(II)-metallogel, revealing its angular frequency response and thixotropic behaviour.

Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation composed of three fruits: amla (Phyllanthus emblica), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica), and haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Triphala is a potent Ayurvedic remedy that promotes digestion, detoxification, and overall wellness, while also providing antioxidant benefits through its trio of nutrient-rich fruits. In order to elucidate the individual contributions of the three ingredients of Triphala from molecular perspective, the individual ingredients were used for the untargeted LCMS/MS analysis.

This work aims to address key issues in the ballistic performance of ceramic-based composite armor, particularly at the joints of spliced bulletproof panels. The edge structure of C/C-SiC ceramic plates and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is redesigned to superimpose the joint areas. These structurally optimized composite pads are examined by numerical simulation of impact dynamics to understand their anti-penetration performance whose accuracy is then validated by live fire tests.
