This experiment aimed to determine the efficacy of fulvic acid (FLA) on growth performance, innate immune system, antioxidant parameters, and expression of immune and antioxidant-related genes in zebrafish (Danio rerio). To this end, 12 tanks (3 per group), each containing 50 zebrafish (with an average weight of 85.7 ± 10.

Article Synopsis
  • * Using an economic model, the study projected lifetime liver complications and costs for both treatments in a hypothetical cohort of 3,882 CHD patients, focusing on serious complications like decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death.
  • * Results showed that bulevirtide significantly reduced complications and associated costs by approximately €11.8 million compared to PEG-IFN-α, suggesting it is a more efficient treatment option

Kidney whole-transcriptome profiling in primary antiphospholipid syndrome reveals complement, interferons and NETs-related gene expression.

Rheumatology (Oxford)

November 2024

First Department of Propaedeutic and Internal Medicine, Joint Academic Rheumatology Program, 'Laiko' General Hospital, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

Objective: Pathogenesis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) remains poorly elucidated. We aimed to evaluate for the first time kidney transcriptome profiles in primary APS vs systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and control subjects.

Methods: We performed RNA sequencing on archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded kidney biopsies from APS (n = 4), SLE (n = 5) and control (n = 3) individuals, differential gene expression analysis (DGEA) and enrichment analysis using gene ontology (GO) and CORUM, KEGG and Reactome pathway databases.

Background: Effective immunotherapeutic agents for use in cats are needed to aid in the management of intractable viral diseases, including feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) infection. The objectives of this study were to compare two different immune stimulants for antiviral activity in cats: (1) TLR 2/6-activating compound polyprenyl immunostimulant; (PI) and (2) liposome Toll-like receptor 3/9 agonist complexes (LTCs) to determine relative abilities to stimulate the induction of type I (IFN-α, IFN-β) and type II (IFN-γ) interferon immune responses in vitro and to study the effects of treatment on immune responses in healthy cats.

Methods: Cytokine and cellular immune responses to PI and LTC were evaluated using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy cats incubated with LTC and PI at indicated concentrations using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assays and ELISA assays.

Some respiratory viruses can cause a viral interference through the activation of the interferon (IFN) pathway that reduces the replication of another virus. Epidemiological studies of coinfections between SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses have been hampered by non-pharmacological measures applied to mitigate the spread of SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the ease of these interventions, SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A viruses can now co-circulate.
