To characterize glutamatergic axon terminals onto sympathetic preganglionic neurons (SPNs), we visualized immunohistochemically three vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) in the intermediolateral cell column (IML) of rat thoracic spinal cord. VGLUT2 and VGLUT3 immunoreactivities but not VGLUT1 immunoreactivity were distributed in the IML and found in terminals making asymmetric synapses and apposed to dendrites immunopositive for choline acetyltransferase, an SPN marker. VGLUT2 and VGLUT3 immunoreactivities were not co-localized with each other. A population of VGLUT2-immunoreactive but not VGLUT3-immunoreactive terminals were adrenergic or noradrenergic. Some of VGLUT3-immunoreactive but not VGLUT2-immunoreactive terminals contained serotonin. These results indicate at least two independent glutamatergic terminal populations, which include a distinct monoaminergic subpopulation, making excitatory inputs onto SPNs.

Hodological patterning refers to developmental mechanisms that link the location of neurons in the brain or spinal cord to specific axonal trajectories that direct connectivity to synaptic targets either within the central nervous system or in the periphery. In vertebrate motor circuits, hodological patterning has been demonstrated at different levels, from the final motor output of somatic and preganglionic autonomic neurons targeting peripheral motoneurons and ganglion cells, to premotor inputs from spinal and brainstem neuron populations targeting the somatic motoneurons and preganglionic autonomic neurons, to cortical neurons that delegate movement commands to the brainstem and spinal neurons. In many cases molecular profiling reveals potential underlying mechanisms whereby selective gene expression creates the link between location and axon trajectory.

Background: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) presents with progressive ascending weakness, but it can also present with dysautonomia such as tachycardia, blood pressure fluctuations, diaphoresis, ileus, and urinary retention. The stellate ganglion block (SGB) technique can restore balance to autonomic nervous function by interrupting the impulse conduction of preganglionic and postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibers, thereby alleviating excessive peripheral blood vessel contraction, enhancing tissue blood supply, balancing hormone secretion, and modulating immune responses. SGB has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in treating various skin conditions affecting the head, face, and neck.

Objective: Acupuncture therapies are known for their effectiveness in treating a variety of gastric diseases, although the mechanisms underlying these effects are not fully understood. This study tested the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) at acupoints Zhongwan (RN12) and Weishu (BL21) for managing gastric motility disorder (GMD) and investigated the underlying mechanisms involved.
Methods: A GMD model was used to evaluate the impact of EA on various aspects of gastric function including the amplitude of gastric motility, electrogastrogram, food intake, and the rate of gastric emptying.

Cervical spinal cord injury usually leads to cardiorespiratory dysfunction due to interruptions of the supraspinal pathways innervating the phrenic motoneurons and thoracic sympathetic preganglionic neurons. Although clinical guidelines recommend maintaining the mean arterial pressure within 85-90 mmHg during the first week of injury, there is no pre-clinical evidence from animal models to prove the therapeutic efficacy of hemodynamic management. Accordingly, the present study was designed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of hemodynamic management in rats with cervical spinal cord contusion.
