In the winter of 1982-83 an experiment was initiated at the University of Hohenheim to investigate the long-term effects of near ambient concentrations of O(3), SO(2), and simulated acidic rain and fog, alone and in combination, on mineral cycling, physiology, biochemistry and anatomy of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European beech (Fagus silvatica L.) seedlings in model ecosystems. Open-top chambers above soil lysimeters were protected with shelters 1 m above the open-top against intrusion of ambient dust and rain. The soil, a replaced acid brown earth with a base saturation of 20-30% was from the Black Forest region of the Federal Republic of Germany. This paper describes the technical design aspects of the study, including chamber construction and ventilation, SO(2) and O(3) application and monitoring, simulated precipitation forms and dispensing features, and the environmental parameters monitored. A short description of the plants used and the soil status is also presented. Chamber climatic and edaphic conditions allowed tree seedling normal growth over the five years of study. The pollutant levels within the appropriate chambers were comparable to ambient concentrations found at southwest German forest sites and varied with weather conditions.

A novel solid electrolyte sensor with considerably improved response times is presented. The new so-called eFIPEX [etched flux (Φ) probe experiment] is based on the FIPEX [flux (Φ) probe experiment] sensor applied for the measurement of molecular and atomic oxygen concentrations. A main application is the measurement of atmospheric atomic oxygen aboard sounding rockets up to altitudes of 250 km.

Background: Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution-including fine particulate matter <2.5µm in diameter (PM)-has previously been associated with incident dementia. As climate change drives longer and more intense wildfire seasons, exposure to PM produced by wildfires may be a unique and increasingly important risk factor for dementia.

Uncontrolled release of active agents in active packaging reduces antimicrobial efficacy, hindering the effective protection of perishable products from microbial infection. Herein, a novel defective engineering was proposed to design defective and hollow ZIF-8 structures grown on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) and use them as fast-reacting nanocarriers for loading and controlled release curcumin (Cur) in sodium alginate (SA) active packaging systems (CZT-Cur-SA). By employing stable chelation between tannic acid (TA) and ZIF-8 zinc ions, the connections between zinc ions and imidazole ligands were severed to form a loose and hollow structure, which facilitates the rapid reaction and release of active ingredients triggered by pH changes in the microenvironment.

Urbanization and industrialization have drastically increased ambient air pollution in urban areas globally from vehicle emissions, solid fuel combustion and industrial activities leading to some of the worst air quality conditions. Air pollution in Ghana causes approximately 28,000 premature deaths and disabilities annually, ranking as a leading cause of mortality and disability-adjusted life years. This study evaluated the annual concentrations of PM NO and O in the ambient air of 57 cities in Ghana for two decades using historical and forecasted data from satellite measurements.

A new approach for hydrogen isotope separation using an unsaturated organometallic complex was proposed. Adsorption measurements of [Mn(dppe)(CO)(N)](BArF) (Mn-dppe) (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, BArF = B[CH(3,5-CF)]) using H and D revealed a significant difference in the adsorption enthalpy of H/D at much higher room temperatures than in previous studies, with D molecules being more strongly adsorbed on unsaturated metal sites. Mixed gas adsorption isotherms were calculated at each temperature using IAST, and it was predicted that D uptake was much larger than H uptake.
