The presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) in food production systems is a public health problem, since they can be transmitted to humans. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterize ESBL-EC from poultry farms located in Argentina. Resistances to β-lactams (first-, third-, and fourth-generation cephalosporins, penicillin), tetracyclines, quinolones, sulfonamides, phosphonates and aminoglycosides were found among the 40 ESBL-EC isolates.

The Republic of Ireland regularly reports the highest annual crude incidence rates of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) enteritis in the European Union, ≈10 times the average. Background: This paper describes a participatory methodology that supports investigation of the synergistic collaboration between communities affected by infectious disease outbreak events and relevant official institutions. The core principle underlying the methodology is the recognition that synergistic relationships, characterised by mutual trust and respect, between affected communities and official institutions provide the most effective means of addressing outbreak situations.

Methods: The methodological approach and lessons learned were derived from four qualitative case studies including (i) two tick-borne disease events (Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Spain, 2016, and tick-borne encephalitis in the Netherlands, 2016); and (ii) two outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (norovirus in Iceland, 2017, and verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli [VTEC] in Ireland, 2018).

In 2007, human infections with a hypervirulent strain of verocytotoxin-producing O157:H7 increased in Sweden and especially in the Halland County. A connection between the cases and a local beef cattle farm with an on-farm abattoir and meat processing plant was established. In this observational study the control measures implemented on the infected farm and the dynamics of infection in the herd are described.
