Eight furanocoumarins, one coumarin and four acridone derivatives have been identified in the roots of Thamnosma rhodesica (Rutaceae). Rhodesiacridone, one of these acridone derivatives, is reported here for the first time. Its structure was elucidated by spectrometric methods including ESI-HR, EI, DCI mass spectrometry, 1H, 13C and 2D NMR experiments. This novel compound showed activities against the intracellular form of a human pathogen, the protozoan parasite Leishmania major. Two known acridone related compounds, gravacridonediol and 1-hydroxy-10-methylacridone, exhibited activities against the intracellular form of the same parasite and the fungus Cladosporium cucumerinum, respectively.

A new aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen is obtained by dimerizing acridin-9(10H)-one (Ac), an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect monomer via an N─N bond and forming 9H,9'H-[10,10'-biacridine]-9,9'-dione (DiAc) with D symmetry. The quenching of DiAc in solution is ascribed to the enhanced basicity promoting hydrogen bonding and then a hydrogen abstraction (HA) reaction and/or an unallowed transition in frontier orbitals with the same symmetry facilitating intersystem crossing. In this work, two novel acridone-based photoinitiators were designed and synthesized for the free radical polymerization of acrylates with a light-emitting diode emitting at 405 nm. These acridone derivatives were employed as mono-component Type II photoinitiators and as multicomponent photoinitiating systems in the presence of an iodonium salt or an amine synergist (EDB) in which they achieved excellent polymerization initiating abilities and high final conversions of the acrylate group. Photoinitiation mechanisms through which reactive species are produced were investigated employing different complementary techniques including steady-state photolysis, steady-state fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy.
