Rare abnormal haemoglobin (Hb) often poses a problem in the diagnosis of relative electrophoresis mobility. The rare neutral Hbs interact with the Hb S and thus can increase the severity of sickle cell anaemia. In the present study, we investigated the use of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) as a method for the identification of neutral or unstable Hb, and compared it with the well-known techniques urea-triton electrophoresis (UT) and isoelectrofocusing (IEF). The results of our experiments showed that Bucuresti Hb was separated without ambiguity by RP-HPLC. To date, no other electrophoresis techniques have been able to isolate this Hb. We also examined the Hb Nouakchott, which was the most hydrophobic Hb. Moreover, the adult and foetal chains of globins (especially the Agamma(t) and Agamma(i) chains) were quantified on the same chromatogram.

Background: Due to environmental hypoxia on the high-altitude local residents often exhibit a compensative increase in hemoglobin concentration to maintain the body's oxygen supply. In certain people, the number of red blood cells continues to grow, resulting in high altitude polycythemia (HAPC) which is characterized by headache, disorientation, sleeplessness, and bone discomfort. HAPC is often associated with multiple complications, of which lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans (LEASO) is rare.

Objective: Previous studies suggested that sudomotor dysfunction is closely related to multiple diabetic microvascular complications. We aimed to investigate the association between sudomotor dysfunction and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (SCAS) in people with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: A total of 1788 participants were included in this cross-sectional study.

Background: Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO) above 94% is typical in children in paediatric intensive critical care units (PICUs) who are receiving invasive ventilation and supplemental oxygen. In a previous report from the Oxy-PICU trial, we showed that lower (conservative) oxygenation targets (SpO 88-92%) are beneficial, showing small but statistically significant differences in duration of organ support and large but non-significant cost reductions at 30 days. In this pre-specified analysis of the Oxy-PICU trial, we compare longer-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness of conservative versus liberal (SpO >94%) oxygenation targets in children with emergency PICU admission.

Over 1400 variants of hemoglobin (Hb) have been identified and characterized with phenotypes ranging from clinically silent to severe clinical manifestations in carriers. Different analytical methods have been established to detect Hb variants. Here, we report the first pediatric case of hemoglobin I-High Wycombe [β59(E3) Lys → Glu] variant found in an infant of Mexican-American descent.
