Unlabelled: Using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, our cohort study matched 237,297 individuals with hearing loss (HL) to 829,431 without HL. The study found an 8-10% higher risk of major osteoporotic fracture in individuals with HL compared to those without. Additionally, within the HL cohort, we identified risk factors for potential inclusion in fracture risk models.

The inferior colliculus is a key nucleus in the central auditory pathway, integrating acoustic stimuli from both cochleae and playing a crucial role in sound localization. It undergoes functional and structural development in childhood and experiences age-related degeneration later in life, contributing to the progression of age-related hearing loss. This study aims at finding out, whether the volume of the human inferior colliculus can be determined by analysis of routinely performed MRIs and whether there is any age-related variation.

Glucose Metabolic Abnormalities and Their Interaction With Defective Phosphate Homeostasis in Tumor-induced Osteomalacia.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, Key Laboratory of Endocrinology, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Dongcheng District, National Commission of Health, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing 100730, China.

Context: Phosphate homeostasis was compromised in tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) due to increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) secretion. Nevertheless, the glucose metabolic profile in TIO patients has not been investigated.

Objectives: This work aimed to clarify the glucose metabolic profiles in TIO patients and explore their interaction with impaired phosphate homeostasis.

Microtia and aural atresia present congenital ear anomalies that affect external ear and are associated with conductive hearing loss. Both anomalies result from exposure to various prenatal risk factors, most common during the first trimester of pregnancy.  This study was aimed at epidemiological analysis of microtia/atresia and associated risk factors in the Kazakhstani population.

Introduction: The Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling pathway is pivotal in regulating various biological processes such as early embryonic development, neural crest cell migration, and cancer invasion. Despite advances in understanding the role of Wnt/PCP pathway dysregulation in tumorigenesis, numerous unanswered questions remain. Our study focused on VANGL2, a core PCP gene, to elucidate its potential mechanistic involvement in cancer development.
