Published: March 2004

Objectives: We hypothesized that fetal cells in maternal blood that do not respond to hematopoietic culture conditions represent endothelial cells. We investigated whether endothelial progenitor cells of fetal origin may be selected from maternal blood on the basis of their expression of CD133 or CD105 and expanded in culture.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 16 pregnant women (gestational age: 11 to 24 weeks) were labeled with magnetic beads coupled to anti-CD133 or anti-CD105. Selection of labeled cells was performed using MACS. Resulting CD133+, CD105+, and CD133-/CD105- cell fractions were placed in culture in conditions favoring endothelial cells for 7 days (positive fractions) to 30 days (depleted fractions). Cells from women carrying male fetuses were analyzed by conventional PCR (SRY primers) for detection of male cells.

Results: Expansion of cells isolated from all subjects occurred in each of the cell fractions. No PCR products consistent with the presence of male cells were detected in women carrying male fetuses.

Conclusion: CD133+ and CD105+ cells isolated from maternal blood can be expanded in vitro under endothelial conditions. These cells appear to be of maternal, rather than fetal, origin.

Heparin rebound in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting surgery: a single-center retrospective study.

J Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, No. 167, Beilishi Road, Xicheng District, China.

Background: Heparin, an anticoagulant used in cardiac surgery, can result in heparin rebound (HR), where it returns postoperatively despite being neutralized with protamine. This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of HR in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) and evaluate the impact of HR on their short-term outcomes.

Methods: HR was defined by a 10% increase in activated coagulation time (ACT) following two hours of heparin neutralization with protamine, bleeding over 200 mL/h, and abnormal laboratory coagulation examination results.

Background: Obstetric hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in Maryland and nationally. Currently, through a quality collaborative, the state is implementing the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) patient safety bundle on obstetric hemorrhage.

Objective: To describe SMM events contributed by obstetric hemorrhage and their preventability in Maryland.

Objective: Successful embryo implantation is contingent upon the intricate interaction between the endometrium and the blastocyst. Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) signifies the clinical challenge of failing pregnancy post-transfer of high-quality embryos, fresh or frozen, in at least three in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles, often in women under 40 years. Recent studies identify impaired blastocyst maternal tissue communication among recurrent implantation failure causes.

Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Delays the Onset of Osteoporosis and Dyslipidemia in Mice With Premature Ovarian Insufficiency.

J Ultrasound Med

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Ultrasound in Medicine and Engineering, College of Biomedical Engineering, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Objectives: The pathogenesis of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) not only affects the ovarian structure and function but also gives rise to complications such as osteoporosis and dyslipidemia. Although low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been proven effective in treating POI, its impact on the associated complications remains unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of LIPUS irradiation on osteoporosis and dyslipidemia in a mouse model of POI.

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications during pregnancy. There is inconsistency between previous studies regarding the blood and inflammatory parameters levels among pregnant women and its association with GDM. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between blood parameters in relation to GDM.
