Follicular atresia was studied in the ovary of the electric ray, Torpedo marmorata, by light and electron microscopy. The course of atresia may be divided into four stages. The first two comprise the dissolution of the oocyte and its phagocytosis by the small cells of the granulosa epithelium. The third stage consists of the transformation of the granulosa epithelium into an active glandular structure and is accompanied by the development of a smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The fourth stage is marked by sclerosis and pigmentary degeneration of the atretic follicle. Together these observations suggest an endocrine steroidogenic role for the corpora atretica (preovulatory corpora lutea) in T. marmorata.

Objective: To study the protective effect of moxibustion for tripterygium-induced premature ovarian failure (POF) and its underlying mechanisms in rats.
Methods: Forty-five female SD rats were randomly divided into normal control, POF model and moxibustion groups (=15/group). The POF model was induced by intragastric administration of Triptolide (40 mg/kg), once daily for 6 weeks.

The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis) is uniparous and has a slow reproduction cycle due to a long gestation period and long interval between births. Even though protected by law, hunting remains one of the main causes hindering the natural population growth of this species in the wild. The histology and reproductive anatomy provide information on the history and reproductive status of the female and offer a tool for the conservation of the species.

We have demonstrated the presence of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptors in human non-gestational corpora lutea. To determine further the characteristics of EGF receptor binding, we examined 30 human corpora lutea throughout the luteal phase and during pregnancy. Scatchard plots of EGF binding in 29 of the 30 corpora lutea were curvilinear, suggesting negative co-operativity.
