Zirconium oxy-salts were hydrolyzed to form positively charged polymer or cluster species in acidic solutions. The zirconium hydrolyzed polymer was found to react with a negatively charged polyelectrolyte, such as poly(vinyl sulfate), and to form a stoichiometric polyion complex. Thus, colloidal titration with poly(vinyl sulfate) was applied to measure the zirconium concentration in an acidic solution by using a Toluidine Blue selective plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrode as a potentiometric end-point detecting device. The determination could be performed with 1% of the relative standard deviation. The colloidal titration stoichiometry at pH < or = 2 was one mol of zirconium per equivalent mol of poly(vinyl sulfate).

In this paper, a sensitive determination method for polyanion using a glucose oxidase (GOx) enzymatic reaction with ferricyanide ion is described. We previously reported that the GOx enzymatic reaction was significantly promoted by a cationic polymer of ε-poly-L-lysine (εPL), and the enzymatic reaction could be utilized for the determination of εPL. Generally, polycation stoichiometrically forms polyion complex with polyanion.

Amyloid aggregation, including aggregation and propagation of prion protein, is a key factor in numerous human diseases, so-called amyloidosis, with a very poor ability for treatment or prevention. The present work describes the effect of sulfated or sulfonated polymers (sodium dextran sulfate, polystyrene sulfonate, polyanethole sulfonate, and polyvinyl sulfate) on different stages of amyloidogenic conversion and aggregation of the prion protein, which is associated with prionopathies in humans and animals. All tested polymers turned out to induce amyloid conversion of the ovine prion protein.

In order to reveal the relationship between the degree of crosslinking and the properties of chitosan nanoparticles, a potassium polyvinyl sulfate (PVSK) titration method was established for the determination of free amino group in chitosan, which showed that there was a window effect in the crosslinking degree and particle size of three kinds of molecular weight chitosan cross-linked by different content of tripolyphosphate (TPP), and the nanoparticles with moderate crosslinking degree were smaller. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) showed the moderate degree of cross-linking nanoparticles had strong antibacterial properties. IR analysis showed that the interaction between chitosan nanoparticles with different crosslinking degree and TPP were different.

Functional thin films containing insulin were prepared using layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of insulin and negatively- or positively-charged polymers on the surface of solid substrates. LbL films composed of insulin and negatively-charged polymers such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(vinylsulfate) (PVS), and dextran sulfate (DS) were prepared through electrostatic affinity between the materials. The insulin/PAA, insulin/PVS, and insulin/DS films were stable in acidic solutions, whereas they decomposed under physiological conditions as a result of a change in the net electric charge of insulin from positive to negative.

Laboratory of Genetic Disease and Perinatal Medicine and Key Laboratory of Birth Defects and Related Diseases of Women and Children of Ministry of Education, West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, Sichuan, PR China.

Background: The beta-3 adrenergic receptor (β3-AR) Trp64Arg and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) -3826 A>G polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with obesity and/or lipid metabolism in some populations. This study examined the possible association of the β3-AR and UCP1 polymorphisms with overweight/obesity or lipid variation in a Southwest Chinese population.

Methods: A total of 418 Han Chinese (249 overweight/obese and 169 healthy control subjects) in the Chengdu area were studied using PCR-RFLP analysis.
