Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction reveals that a pentacene monolayer, grown on an amorphous SiO2 substrate that is commonly used as a dielectric layer in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), is crystalline. A preliminary energy-minimized model of the monolayer, based on the GIXD data, reveals that the pentacene molecules adopt a herringbone arrangement with their long axes tilted slightly from the substrate normal. Although this arrangement resembles the general packing features of the (001) layer in single crystals of bulk pentacene, the monolayer lattice parameters and crystal structure differ from those of the bulk. Because carrier transport in pentacene OTFTs is presumed to occur in the semiconductor layers near the dielectric interface, the discovery of a crystalline monolayer structure on amorphous SiO2 has important implications for transport in OTFTs.

The intriguing photophysical properties of monolayer stacks of different transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), revealing rich exciton physics including interfacial and moiré excitons, have recently prompted an extension of similar investigations to hybrid systems of TMDs and organic films, as the latter combine large photoabsorption cross sections with the ability to tailor energy levels by targeted synthesis. To go beyond single-molecule photoexcitations and exploit the excitonic signatures of organic solids, crystalline molecular films are required. Moreover, a defined registry on the substrate, ideally an epitaxy, is desirable to also achieve an excitonic coupling in momentum space.

Metallic surfaces with unidirectional anisotropy are often used to guide the self-assembly of organic molecules along a particular direction. Such supports thus offer an avenue for the fabrication of hybrid organic-metal interfaces with tailored morphology and precise elemental composition. Nonetheless, such control often comes at the expense of detrimental interfacial interactions that might quench the pristine properties of molecules.

Using first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory, we investigated the adsorption of pentacene molecules on monolayer two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). We considered the four most popular TMDs, namely, MoS, MoSe, WS and WSe, and we examined the structural and electronic properties of pentacene/TMD systems. We discuss how monolayer pentacene interacts with the TMDs, and how this interaction affects the charge transfer and work function of the heterostructure.

Using atomic force microscopy, we probed the growth of pentacene molecules on graphene that was fabricated by chemical vapor deposition and transferred onto 300 nm-thick SiO substrates. The topography of such graphene has two important properties. First, its surface is comprised of folds that have different orientations, and second, it has several multilayer-graphene regions distributed over the monolayer-graphene surface.
