OpenNavSense platform: A low-cost, open-source inertial navigation system for the evaluation of estimation algorithms.

HardwareX

March 2025

Instituto de Investigacion Astronomico y Aeroespacial Pedro Paulet, Universidad Nacional de San Agustin de Arequipa, 04000, Arequipa, Peru.

Inertial navigation systems (INS) are widely used in commercial aviation, maritime navigation, and unmanned vehicle guidance. However, these systems are often sensitive, costly, and challenging to access. To address these limitations, an open-source, low-cost platform named INS OpenNavSense has been developed.

A shikimic acid derived carbon dots (SACNDs-FITC) for multi-modal detection and removal of Hg: Probe design, sensing performance, and applications in food analysis.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Life-Organic Analysis of Shandong Province, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Qufu Normal University, Qufu, Shandong 273165, China.

The first shikimic acid derived fluorescent carbon dots (SACNDs-FITC) for multi-modal detection and simultaneous removal of Hg is revealed. The fluorescence of SACNDs-FITC centered at 520 nm can be selectively quenched by Hg, while the emission centered at 420 nm remains constant which can be used for self-calibration. Naked-eye distinguishable color change from yellow to colourless under daylight and from green to blue under UV light could be observed for SACNDs-FITC in the real-time detection of Hg.

Over the past ten years, there has been an increasing demand for reliable consumer wearables as users are inclined to monitor their health and fitness metrics in real-time, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflectance pulse oximeters in fitness trackers and smartwatches provide convenient, non-invasive SpO measurements but face challenges in achieving medical-grade accuracy, particularly due to difficulties in capturing physiological signals, which may be affected by skin pigmentation. Hence, this study sets out to investigate the influence of skin pigmentation, particularly in individuals with darker skin, on the accuracy and reliability of SpO measurement in consumer wearables that utilise reflectance pulse oximeters.

Real-Time Quantification of Gas Leaks Using a Snapshot Infrared Spectral Imager.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Optical Engineering, Utsunomiya University, 7-2-1 Yoto, Utsunomiya 321-8585, Japan.

We describe the various steps of a gas imaging algorithm developed for detecting, identifying, and quantifying gas leaks using data from a snapshot infrared spectral imager. The spectral video stream delivered by the hardware allows the system to combine spatial, spectral, and temporal correlations into the gas detection algorithm, which significantly improves its measurement sensitivity in comparison to non-spectral video, and also in comparison to scanning spectral imaging. After describing the special calibration needs of the hardware, we show how to regularize the gas detection/identification for optimal performance, provide example SNR spectral images, and discuss the effects of humidity and absorption nonlinearity on detection and quantification.
