Concentration- and temperature-dependent IR, NMR and dipole-moment studies on 4-N,N-dimethylamino-1,1,1-trifluoro-3-buten-2-one and two of its higher homologues showed that these compounds undergo reversible dimerization in nonpolar solvents. Antiparallel "closed" dimers are formed with a network of improper intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds. Quantitative analysis of the 1H NMR data yielded delta H0 = -17.6 kJ mol-1 and delta S0 = -46.9 J deg-1 mol-1. The interactions observed are the strongest among those involving a C-H group reported so far. The complex described here is the first example of a cyclic complex stabilized by two improper C-H...O hydrogen bonds. The conclusions drawn from the solution and solid-state data were confirmed by ab initio calculations.

Chalcones are organic substances that have diverse biological activities and exhibit potential for the treatment of various diseases. The properties of these substances depend on the type and position of the functional group attached to their aromatic rings. As a result, in this work the chalcone (2E)-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-prop-2-en-1-one (CHO) was investigated by Raman spectroscopy and computational calculations at high pressures with the objective of analyzing its structural stability.

γ- and δ-lactones were formed by bromine oxidation of commercially available D-lyxose, as confirmed by IR analysis. The former was isolated, and its structure was confirmed by NMR spectra and X-ray analysis. In this structure, the presence of both intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds was found.

The title compounds, CHO ( and ), are tetra-cyclic benzoates composed of a taxane ring with a fused dioxolane ring as the core skeleton. In compound , the five-membered dioxolane ring is essentially planar while the two cyclo-hexane rings and the cyclo-octane ring adopt chair and chair-chair forms, respectively, and there are three intra-molecular H⋯H short contacts. The corresponding ring conformations in are similar; however, one intra-molecular C-H⋯O inter-action and two H⋯H short contacts are observed, and the benzoyl and meth-oxy-methyl groups show orientational disorder.
