Published: February 2004

Large spills of refined petroleum products have been an occasional occurrence over the past few decades. This has not been true for large spills of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This paper compares the likely similarities and differences between accidental releases from a ship of sizable quantities of these different hydrocarbon fuels, their subsequent spreading, and possible pool-fire behavior. Quantitative estimates are made of the spread rate and maximum slick size, burn rate, and duration; effective thermal radiation; and subsequent soot generation.

Accessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content in fishes from the region of the 2019 oil spill on the northeast Brazil coast.

December 2024

Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Departamento de Química Fundamental, Av. Jornalista Aníbal Fernandes, s/n, Cidade Universitária, 50740-560 Recife, PE, Brazil. Electronic address:

In August 2019, Brazil experienced its largest large oil spill, which impacted extensive areas and significantly affected the northeastern region, particularly Pernambuco. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), major oil components, are critical for assessing fish contamination risks. This study presents two sample pretreatment methods for fish samples - ultrasound-enhanced air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (UE-AA-LLME) for low molar mass PAHs, and matrix solid-phase dispersion for high molar mass PAHs - followed by a Gas-Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) detection.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Florida International University, Global Forensic and Justice Center, 11200 SW 8th St, AHC1 - 429, Miami, FL, 33199, United States. Electronic address:

Environmental exposure to crude oil through seepage and spillage poses risks to the immediate environment and the broader ecosystem as areas along the oil distribution path are affected by the influx of crude petroleum as well as the environmental, economic, and civil unrest that accompanies it. There is a large financial burden associated with the lost resources, including the cost of rehabilitation, and the affected sources of revenue for communities affected by oil spills. As such, it is crucial to determine the responsible parties.

FeS-based nanocomposites: A promising approach for sustainable environmental remediation - Focus on adsorption and photocatalysis - A review.

Department of Sanitary Engineering, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Gdańsk University of Technology, Poland; School of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering, College of Engineering, Korea University, 145 Anam-ro, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, 02841, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Population expansion, industrialization, urban development, and climate changes increased the water crisis in terms of drinking water availability. Among the various nanomaterials for nanoremediation towards water treatment, FeS-based nanocomposites have emerged as promising candidates in the adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of contaminants. This paper, therefore, evaluates the potential of FeS-based nanocomposites for environmental applications, more specifically the combined use of adsorption and photocatalysis.

The solar-driven catalytic recycling of plastics has recently emerged as a new frontier in industry. Nevertheless, its large-scale application requires the catalysts being capable of the strong absorption of visible and near-infrared light, strengthened photothermal efficiency, high activity and selective toward target product, enhanced stability, as well as easy separation from the products. In this work, magnetic Ni-MnO nanocatalyst (MN/C) is synthesized via the pyrolysis of metal-organic framework (MOF) for the photothermal catalytic recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET).

Reference dosimetry measurement in a pencil beam scanning system can exhibit dose fluctuation due to intra-spill spot positional drift. This results in a noisy reference dosimetry measurement against energy which could introduce errors in monitor unit calibration. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of smoothing the reference dosimetry measurements on the type A uncertainty.
