Embryonic development is a complex self-organizing process orchestrated by a series of regulatory events at the molecular and cellular levels, resulting in the formation of a fully functional organism. This review focuses on activin protein as a mesoderm-inducing factor and the self-organizing properties it confers. Activin has been detected in both unfertilized eggs and embryos, suggesting its involvement in early developmental processes.

This study investigates the effect of ultrasonic-assisted preparation on the structural and physicochemical properties of water caltrop starch-palmitic acid complexes as a function of ultrasound intensity and treatment time. All samples exhibited the characteristic birefringence of starch-lipid complexes under the polarized microscope, and flake-like and irregular structure under scanning electron microscope (SEM), indicating the formation of complexes through ultrasonic-assisted preparation. X-ray diffraction pattern further confirmed the transition from the original A-type structure for native starch to V-type structure for starch-lipid complexes, and the relative crystallinity of starch-lipid complexes increased as the ultrasound intensity and treatment time increased.

Bacterial plant diseases, worsened by biofilm-mediated resistance, are increasingly threatening global food security. Numerous attempts have been made to develop agrochemicals that inhibit biofilms, however, their ineffective foliar deposition and difficulty in removing mature biofilms remain major challenges. Herein, multifunctional three-component supramolecular nano-biscuits (NI6R@CB[7]@β-CD) are successfully engineered via ordered self-assembly between two macrocycles [cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)] and (R)-2-naphthol-based bis-imidazolium bromide salt (NI6R).

Fabricating organic semiconducting materials into large-scale, well-organized architectures is critical for building high-performance molecular electronics. While graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) hold enormous promise for various device applications, their assembly into a well-structured monolayer or multilayer architecture poses a substantial challenge. Here, we report the preparation of length-defined monodisperse GNRs via the integrated iterative binomial synthesis (IIBS) strategy and their self-assembly into submicrometer architectures with long-range order, uniform orientation, as well as regular layers.

Sensing light's polarization and wavefront direction enables surface curvature assessment, material identification, shadow differentiation, and improved image quality in turbid environments. Traditional polarization cameras utilize multiple sensor measurements per pixel and polarization-filtering optics, which result in reduced image resolution. We propose a nanophotonic pipeline that enables compressive sensing and reduces the sampling requirements with a low-refractive-index, self-assembled optical encoder.
