Background: The clinical spectrum of pertussis ranges from mild cough illnesses of short duration to typical illness with paroxysmal cough, whooping and posttussive vomiting. We performed comparative genotyping of Bordetella pertussis isolates from children in Germany with severe or mild pertussis.
Methods: Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of genomic DNA, digested with the restriction endonucleases Xba I and Spe I, was used to determine the profiles of strains isolated from 31 unvaccinated children with severe symptoms of pertussis (with hospitalization and/or complications) compared with isolates from 32 matched children with mild symptoms.
Results: No significant differences in PFGE patterns were found in B. pertussis strains isolated from children with severe vs. mild illness.
Conclusions: Differences in virulence of circulating B. pertussis strains can be absent or might not correlate with specific PFGE patterns. Other methods should be evaluated to identify differences in virulence.

Unlabelled: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) characterised by type 2 inflammation, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, atopic dermatitis, food allergies and eosinophilic esophagitis, are increasing in prevalence worldwide. Currently, there is a major paradigm shift in the management of these diseases, towards the concept of disease modification and the treatment goal remission, regardless of severity and age. Remission as a treatment goal in chronic inflammatory NCDs was first introduced in rheumatoid arthritis, and then adopted in other non-type 2 inflammatory diseases.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between endometriosis (EMs) severity and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) risk in the subsequent pregnancy.
Method: Clinical records of 2,142 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for EMs at Fujian Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2014 to January 2018, who had achieved pregnancy and were delivered, were analyzed. Baseline data, EMs stage, The Revised American Fertility Society (R-AFS) score, levels of serum indexes, and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes were recorded.

Objective: To conduct a systematic review of neurocognitive dysfunctions in patients with childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS), a neuropsychiatric disorder that occurs before age 13 and is rarer and more severe than adult-onset schizophrenia.
Method: A search was made in the PubMed database. Sixty-seven studies (out of 543) which analyzed Intellectual Quotient (IQ), attentional, memory and executive functions were selected by two independent researchers.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common non-scarring hair loss condition whose specific pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. In children, AA often co-occurs with atopic dermatitis (AD), complicating treatment. Here, we report the case of a child with myasthenia gravis who had severe AA and moderate AD.

Background: This study aimed to assess right ventricular (RV) endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) in fetuses with critical pulmonary stenosis (CPS) and pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PA-IVS) and to investigate the implications of RV EFE for circulatory outcomes.
Methods: Fetal echocardiographic data from July 2018 to January 2021 were collected. Three reviewers independently graded EFE based on the presence and extent of endocardial echogenicity.
