AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

The eel and human pathogen Vibrio vulnificus serovar E (biotype 2) is seldom isolated from natural waters, although it can survive in sterilized artificial seawater microcosms for years. The main objective of the present study was to investigate whether aquatic microbiota can limit its survival and recovery from water samples. A set of preliminary experiments of survival in microcosms containing natural seawater and water from eel farms showed that the persistence of this pathogen was mainly controlled by grazing, and secondarily by bacterial competition. The bacterial competition was further analysed in artificial seawater microcosms co-inoculated with selected virulent serovar E (VSE) strains and potential competitors. Competitors included V. vulnificus biotype 1 isolates and strains of selected species that can grow on the selective media designed for V. vulnificus isolation from water samples. Evidences of bacterial competition that was detrimental for VSE recovery were recorded. Thus, some species produced a deleterious effect on VSE strains under starvation, and others were able to use the resources more efficiently under nutrient input. These results suggest that an overgrowth of more efficient competitor bacteria in conventional media used for isolation of V. vulnificus could mask the recovery of VSE strains and explain the scarcity of reports on the isolation of this human and eel pathogen from natural waters.

This work examines the photocatalytic capacity of FeO-TiO catalysts for inactivating Enterococcus faecalis in water and compares it to a peroxide-assisted process. The influence of HO, PMS, pH, and temperature is assessed. Material stability and free radical species involved in disinfection are also evaluated.

Towards fostering a more sustainable food production system in face of the climate change challenge, alternative protein meat-substitute products that are plant-based and free of animal by-products have been gaining attractions from both food manufacturers and consumers. With these so-called plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs) becoming increasingly available at supermarkets, there is very little known about their microbial properties. In this short report, we characterized the bacterial composition of raw plant-based ground meat imitation retail products using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

Hydration conditions as a critical factor in antibiotic-mediated bacterial competition outcomes.

Antibiotic secretion plays a pivotal role in bacterial interference competition; yet, the impact of environmental hydration conditions on such competition is not well understood. Here, we investigate how hydration conditions affect interference competition among bacteria, studying the interactions between the antibiotic-producing FZB42 and two bacterial strains susceptible to its antibiotics: 85-10 and DC3000. Our results show that wet-dry cycles significantly modify the response of the susceptible bacteria to both the supernatant and cells of the antibiotic-producing bacteria, compared to constantly wet conditions.

We herein investigated the effects of salt (NaCl) stress on soybean nodulation by rhizobial strains. We specifically exami-ned: (1) the effects of NaCl on nodule maturity and positioning by inoculating three rhizobial strains (Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA110, Bradyrhizobium elkanii USDA31, and Sinorhizobium fredii USDA191) onto soybean variety CNS, (2) the effects of the NaCl treatment on isoflavones (daidzein and genistein) secretion by CNS, (3) the effects of the NaCl treatment on gene expression induced by daidzein and genistein in rhizobia, and (4) the effects of the NaCl treatment on rhizobial growth. The results obtained were as follows: (1) the NaCl treatment delayed nodule development and reduced nodulation on the primary root following the USDA110 inoculation, minimal sensitivity regarding nodule formation in the USDA 31 inoculation, and significantly increased the mature nodule number and nodules on the primary root following the USDA 191 inoculation.

Insights into the dynamics and evolution of Rummeliibacillus stabekisii prophages in extreme environments: from Antarctic soil to spacecraft floors.

Laboratório de Ecologia E Biotecnologia Microbiana, Instituto de Microbiologia Paulo de Góes, Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal Do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Bloco I, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil.

Since prophages can play a multifaceted role in bacterial evolution, this study aims to characterize the virome of Rummeliibacillus stabekisii, a bacterium isolated from different environments, including Antarctic soil and NASA spacecraft floors. From the analyses, it was found that the Antarctic strain, PP9, had the largest number of prophages, including intact ones, indicating potential benefits for survival in adverse conditions. In contrast, other strains harbored predominantly degenerate prophages, suggesting a dynamic process of gene gain and loss during evolution.
