A remarkable feature of the spin-crossover process in several dinuclear iron(II) compounds is a plateau in the two-step transition curve. Up to now, it has not been possible to analyse the spin state of dinuclear pairs that constitute such a plateau, due to the relative high temperatures at which the transition takes place in complexes investigated so far. We solved this problem by experimentally studying a novel dinuclear spin-crossover compound [[Fe(phdia)(NCS)(2)](2)(phdia)] (phdia: 4,7-phenanthroline-5,6-diamine). We report here on the synthesis and characterisation of this system, which exhibits a two-step spin transition at T(c1)=108 K and T(c2)=80 K, displaying 2 K and 7 K wide thermal hysteresis loops in the upper and the lower steps, respectively. A plateau of approximately 20 K width centred at about 90 K, which corresponds to the 50 % of the spin conversion, separates the two transitions. The composition of the plateau was identified in metastable state after quenching to 4.2 K by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy in an external magnetic field. Such experiments revealed that the plateau consists mainly of [HS-LS] pairs (HS=high spin, LS=low spin) and confirmed the hypothesis that the spin conversion in dinuclear entities proceeds through [LS-LS]<-->[HS-LS]<-->[HS-HS] pairs. The results are discussed in terms of a thermodynamic model based on the regular solution theory adapted for dinuclear spin-crossover compounds.

We present the synthesis of two new novel tetradentate ligands based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 2-(2-pyridyl)-5-[,-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (LTetraPy-ODA) and 2-(2-phenyl)-5-[,-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (LTetraPh-ODA). The ligands were used to prepare six mononuclear complexes [Fe(LTetraPy-ODA)(NCE)] (C1-C3) and [Fe(LTetraPh-ODA)(NCE)] (C4-C6) where E = S, Se or BH. In addition, the ligand LTetraPy-ODA was employed in the synthesis of a new di-nuclear complex [FeII2(LTetraPh)](ClO)·1 CHNO·1.

Inspired by the well-studied mononuclear spin crossover compound [Fe(HB(pz))(bipy)], the bipyridine-based bisbidentate ligands 1,2-di(2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl)ethyne (ac(bipy)) and 1,4-di(2,2'-bipyridine-5-yl)-3,5-dimethoxybenzene (Ph(OMe)(bipy)) are used to bridge two [Fe(HB(pz))] units, leading to the charge-neutral dinuclear iron(II) compounds [{Fe(HB(pz))} μ-(ac(bipy))] (1) and [{Fe(HB(pz))} μ-(Ph(OMe)(bipy))] (2), respectively. The spin-crossover properties of these molecules are investigated by temperature-dependent PPMS measurements, Mössbauer, vibrational and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopy. While compound 1 undergoes complete SCO with = 125 K, an incomplete spin transition is observed for 2 with an inflection point at 152 K and a remaining high-spin fraction of 40% below 65 K.

A dinuclear Fe(II) spin crossover (SCO) complex with the formula [FeL(NCS)]·2DMF·2HO (1) was synthesised from 1-naphthylimino-1,2,4-triazole (L). Complex 1 exhibits an incomplete thermally induced spin transition with a transition temperature of 95 K and a thermally trapped metastable high-spin state at low temperatures. Furthermore, it undergoes a reversible light-induced spin crossover by alternate irradiation with 532 and 808 nm lasers.

A dinuclear complex [(HO)Zn(LH)Eu(NO)] containing a hexadentate Schiff-base {NO}-donor ligand LH was prepared and characterized by X-ray structural analysis and IR, electronic and fluorescence spectroscopy. DC magnetic data show that upon heating the diamagnetic complex with the ground state Eu(III)-F and Zn(II)-S switches to paramagnetic species due to the population of F ( = 1 to 6) magnetic multiplets. The magnetic susceptibility increases from zero, passes through a maximum, and then decreases upon heating.

The creation of magnetically switchable materials that concurrently incorporate spin crossover (SCO) and a structural phase transition (SPT) presents a significant challenge in materials science. In this study, we prepared four structurally related cobalt(II)-based SCO compounds: two one-dimensional (1D) chains of {[(enbzp)Co(μ-L)](ClO)·sol} (L = bpee, sol = 2MeOH·HO, 1; L = bpea, sol = none, 2; enbzp = ,'-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(1-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine); bpee = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene; and bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) and their discrete segments, [{(enbzp)Co}(μ-L)](ClO)·2MeOH (L = bpee, 3; L = bpea, 4). In all of these complexes, each Co(II) center is equatorially chelated by the planar tetradentate ligand enbzp and connected to a chain or dinuclear structure through bpee or bpea ligands along its axial direction.
