Inactivated hepatitis A vaccines were developed in the 1980s and were introduced during the early 1990s. The Aventis Pasteur (AvP) inactivated hepatitis A virus antigen is used in several different vaccine formulations licensed for adults and children. Presented here are the immunogenicity results compiled from 37 clinical trials performed in 20 different countries between 1991 and 2001 in which these vaccines were administered to adults (16 years of age and over), children (aged 12 months-17 years), and infants (younger than 12 months). The accumulated clinical experience with these hepatitis A virus-containing vaccines demonstrates the excellent immunogenicity of this antigen in a wide range of situations. As with other licensed inactivated hepatitis A vaccines, immunological priming is achieved in virtually all vaccinees after a single-dose primary immunization, and it may be reinforced by a booster vaccination administered 6-36 months after the primary vaccination.

Background/objectives: Cirrhosis is the precursor to most cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Understanding the mechanisms leading to the transition from cirrhosis to HCC and identifying key biomarkers is crucial to developing effective screening strategies and reducing HCC-related mortality. DNA methylation is associated with gene inactivation and plays an important role in physiological and pathological processes; however, its role in cirrhosis progression to HCC is unknown.

Background: Nonenveloped viruses, such as hepatitis A virus (HAV) and parvovirus B19 (B19V), are not inactivated by detergents and solvents commonly used to manufacture plasma derivatives. Cases of transfusion-transmitted HAV and B19V have already been described in several countries. This study aimed to determine the incidence of HAV and B19V asymptomatic infections in blood donors from Rio de Janeiro and evaluate the residual risk of transmission to blood derivative recipients.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has been reported to synergize with hepatitis B virus (HBV) to induce development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Precise daily exposure to AFB1 and its contribution to liver injury have not been quantified and have even been disregarded due to lack of convenient detection, and the strong species specificity of HBV infection has restricted research on their synergistic harm. Hence, our objective was to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which AFB1 exacerbates HBV-related injury.

Human enteric viruses and emerging viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, influenza virus and monkeypox virus, are frequently detected in wastewater. Human enteric viruses are highly persistent in water, but there is limited information available for non-enteric viruses. The present study evaluated the stability of hepatitis A virus (HAV), murine norovirus (MNV), influenza A virus H3N2 (IAV H3N2), human coronavirus (HCoV) 229E, and vaccinia virus (VACV) in reference water (RW), effluent wastewater (EW) and drinking water (DW) under refrigeration and room temperature conditions.

From the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus in 2003 to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in 2019, coronavirus has seriously threatened human health. Electromagnetic waves not only own high penetration and low pollution but also can physically resonate with the virus. Several studies have demonstrated that electromagnetic waves can inactivate viruses efficiently.
