Objective: To evaluate efficacy and side effects of mastalgia treatment with tamoxifen.

Patients And Methods: Women with moderate to severe mastalgia were elected. Age, relation of mastalgia with menses, tamoxifen doses, months of treatment, side effects and pain control with tamoxifen were analyzed for all cases.

Results: One hundred and forty-one cases were evaluated. Patients between 41 and 50 years old (45.3%), with moderated (67.3%) and non cyclical mastalgia (70%) were the most frequent. Two to four moths were the usual time of treatment (78%) for pain control; 64 patients (45%) showed side effects (10 mg 9.7% and 20 mg 41.6%, p < 0.001), dizziness and cephalalgia were the most frequent, but only eight (5.6%) stopped treatment. Tamoxifen achieved pain control in 67% of patients.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that tamoxifen is an effective treatment to control moderate to severe mastalgia.
