The study on the respiration and production of bacterioplankton in five shrimp cultural enclosure ecosystems showed that the production and respiration fluctuated from 90 to 909 and 248 to 1785 micrograms C.L-1.d-1, respectively. There existed a significant positive relationship between production and respiration. The daily P/B ratio of bacterioplancton averaged 0.93 d-1, and its production efficiency averaged 0.34.

As global food security issues become increasingly severe, an important innovation in agricultural production patterns, namely integrated rice-fish farming, has been widely implemented around the world, especially in Asia. To assess the impact of integrated rice-crayfish () farming (IRCF) on agricultural ecosystems, we used Illumina high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing to analyze differences in diversity, composition, co-occurrence network, and assembly process of planktonic bacterial communities in paddy water between traditional rice farming (TRM) and IRCF. The change in the community structure of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, and in the degree of coupling between them as well as the environmental conditions, have substantial impacts on the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels and finally on the fate of organic matter. The microbial community structure, usually described only by the abundance of the different taxonomic or functional groups, can be extended to include other levels of descriptors, like physiological state and single-cell properties. These features play a role in the ecological regulation of microbial communities but are not generally studied as additional descriptors of the community structure.
