The synthesis, electronic structure, and oxidation-reduction chemistry of a homologous series of Zn(II) porphyrinogens are presented. The fully reduced member of the series, [LZn](2-), was prepared in two steps from pyrrole and acetone. The compound undergoes consecutive two-electron, ligand-based, oxidations at +0.21 and +0.63 V vs NHE to yield [L(Delta)Zn] and [L(Delta Delta)Zn](2+), which also have been independently prepared by chemical means. X-ray diffraction analysis of the redox intermediary, [L(Delta)Zn], shows that the partly oxidized macrocycle is composed of a methylene-bridged dipyrrole that is doubly strapped to a two-electron oxidized dipyrrole bridged by a cyclopropane ring (L(Delta)). The localization of two hole equivalents on the oxidized side of the porphyrinogen framework is consistent with a two-electron mixed valency formulation for the [L(Delta)Zn] species. Electronic structure calculations and electronic spectroscopy support this formalism. Density functional theory computations identify the HOMO to be localized on the reduced half of the macrocycle and the LUMO to be localized on its oxidized half. As implicated by the energy level diagram, the lowest energy transition in the absorption spectrum of [L(Delta)Zn] exhibits charge-transfer character. Taken together, these results establish the viability of using a ligand framework as a two- and four-electron/hole reservoir in the design of multielectron redox schemes.

The reported copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) of either Cu or Cu or mixed valence (MV) Cu/Cu or Cu/Cu characters are found to be stabilized with a discrete set of ligand donors; hence, analogous Cu NCs with a common architecture supported by the same or nearly the same donor set that exhibit different MV states of Cu, such as Cu/Cu and Cu/Cu, are unknown. Such a series of highest nuclearity copper clusters supported by aromatic thiol-S donor ligands, namely [(L4)CuI15Cu(μ-S)](PF) (1), [(L4)CuI15Cu(μ-S)]ClO·8CH (2) and [(L4)CuI15Cu(DMF)](PF)·CHOH·2CH (3), where L = 2-((3-X-thiophen)-(2-yl-methylene)amino)-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenethiol (X = H/Me), have been synthesized and their electronic structural properties have been examined and reported herein. The Cu NCs, 1 and 2, feature a central sulfido-S (S) bridged tetracopper SCu core inside a sphere-shaped CuS truncated octahedron.

The potassium metal reduction of aryl isocyanates (aryl = phenyl, -tolyl, 3,5-dimethylphenyl, 4-biphenylyl, and 1-naphthyl) in THF with 18-crown-6 or in HMPA results in the formation of the corresponding triaryl isocyanurate anion radicals. Continued exposure to potassium results in loss of the isocyanurate anion radical and the eventual formation of the respective biaryl anion radical. The 1,1'-binaphthyl anion radical is found to undergo a cyclodehydrogenation reaction, which leads to formation of the perylene anion radical.

A convenient design strategy opens access to neutral open-shell mixed-valence species the redox transformation of charged stable precursors, , the spiro-fused borate anions. We have implemented this strategy for the synthesis of the first neutral mixed-valence diradical: two neutral mixed-valence radical fragments were assembled a twisted biphenyl bridge. The diradical is a crystalline solid obtained in almost quantitative yield by using a facile synthetic procedure.

Octahedral Hexanuclear Rhenium Cluster Dimers Bridged by Pyrazine or 4,4'-Bipyridine with 23- and 24-Electron Configurations.

Research Center for Thermal and Entropic Science, Graduate School of Science, Osaka University, Toyonaka 560-0043, Japan.

New pyrazine (pz)- and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy)-bridged octahedral hexanuclear rhenium(III) cluster dimers, [{Re(μ-S)Cl}(μ-L)] (L = pz, []; L = 4,4'-bpy, []), with 2 × 24 d-electrons {Re(24e)} were obtained in a single-step reaction via photoirradiation of [Re(μ-S)Cl] with L in a 2:1 ratio at room temperature. The {Re(23e)} dimers, [{Re(μ-S)Cl}(μ-L)] (L = pz, []; L = 4,4'-bpy, []), were synthesized through two-electron oxidation of [] and [], respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structures of [] and [] were determined, revealing structural distortion of the Re core of [] due to the Jahn-Teller effect.

Configurational Isomerism in Bimetallic Decametalates.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Cambridge, Philippa Fawcett Drive, Cambridge CB3 0AS, UK.

In this work, we report on the development of a computational algorithm that explores the configurational isomer space of bimetallic decametalates with general formula MxM10-x'O28q. For being a natural number in the range of 0 to 10, the algorithm identifies 318 unique configurational isomers. The algorithm is used to generate mixed molybdenum(VI)-vanadium(V) systems MoxV10-xO288- for x=0,1,2, and 3 that are of experimental relevance.
