Published: March 2004

Luminescence quenching of Eu(fod)3(fod = 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedionate) by a Cu(II) macrocycle was studied at 25, 35 and 45 degrees C by steady-state and flash luminescence techniques, varying the Cu(II) concentration between 0.2 and 20 mM. Experimental variation of the observed rate constant with the quencher concentration is rationalized in terms of a mechanism involving the quenching of two unequilibrated species by the Cu(II) macrocycle.

Superoxide dismutase enzymes are a major defense against superoxide, which is a potent reactive oxygen species. Misregulation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent neuronal damage are etiological hallmarks of neurodegenerative disease. Macrocyclic small molecules have offered inroads toward functional SOD1 mimics.

Article Synopsis
  • Organophosphate neuroactive agents pose serious security threats in military, terrorist, and industrial contexts, necessitating efficient decontamination methods.
  • The study focuses on a Cu(II) complex with a thiophene anchor for its potential to hydrolyze these harmful agents, using the insecticide paraoxon as a model for testing.
  • Results show that this complex can effectively degrade paraoxon and can be immobilized on a polymer substrate, suggesting its potential use for decontaminating organophosphate agents under mild conditions.

The intensive interest in expanded porphyrins can be attributed to their appealing photoelectric and coordination behavior. In this work, an N-confused heptaphyrin 1 was synthesized by an acid-catalyzed [3+4] condensation reaction. The introduction of an N-confused pyrrolic unit into the heptaphyrin macrocycle led to the formation of a figure-eight-like conformation with nonsymmetrical "NNNN" and "NNNC" coordination cavities employable for bimetallic coordination.

Self-assembly of M(ClO) (M(II) = Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II)) with dicyclopentyldi(pyridine-3-yl)silane (L) as a donor in a mixture of acetonitrile and toluene produces crystals consisting of ML double-stranded macrocycles. The geometry around the M(II) cations is a typical octahedral arrangement, but the metallamacrocycles' outer axial coordination environment is sensitive to the M(II) cations. The conformation of the unique metallamacrocycles is informatively dependent on the nature of the coordination around the M(II) cations subtle co-ligand competition among perchlorate anions, water, and acetonitrile.

Copper-catalyzed electrochemical atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) is a new method for the creation of new C-C bonds under mild conditions. In this work, we have explored the reactivity of an analogous series of N macrocyclic Cu complexes as ATRA precatalysts, which are primed by reduction to their monovalent oxidation state. These complexes were fully characterized structurally, spectroscopically, and electrochemically.
