The visual processing of objects in natural scenes is fast and efficient, as indexed by behavioral and ERP data [Nature 381 (1996) 520]. The results from a recent experiment suggested that such fast routines work in parallel across the visual field when subjects were presented with two natural scenes simultaneously [Nature Neurosci. 5 (2002) 629]. In the present experiment, the visual system was driven to its limits by presenting one, two or four scenes simultaneously. Behavior and ERP reveal a clear cost in processing an increasing number of scenes. However, a parallel-late selection model can still account for the results. This model is developed and discussed with reference to behavioral, single-unit and ERP data.

The evolution of sociality is one of the major evolutionary transitions in the history of life and a key step in this transition is the occurrence of kin associations. Yet, the question of what demographic processes and environmental factors generate kin-structured populations and drive kin-directed cooperation remains open. In this review, we synthesise 30 years of studies of the long-tailed tit Aegithalos caudatus, which has a kin-selected cooperative breeding system with redirected help: failed breeders may help to raise offspring of conspecifics, typically relatives, breeding nearby.

Introduction: The automated analysis of connected speech using natural language processing (NLP) emerges as a possible biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it remains unclear which types of connected speech are most sensitive and specific for the detection of AD.
Methods: We applied a language model to automatically transcribed connected speech from 114 Flemish-speaking individuals to first distinguish early AD patients from amyloid negative cognitively unimpaired (CU) and then amyloid negative from amyloid positive CU individuals using five different types of connected speech.

Introduction: Cognitive fatigue is mainly caused by enduring mental stress or monotonous work, impairing cognitive and physical performance. Natural scene exposure is a promising intervention for relieving cognitive fatigue, but the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) simulated natural scene exposure is unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of VR natural scene on cognitive fatigue and further explored its underlying neurophysiological alterations with electroencephalogram (EEG) microstates analysis.

Despite its importance, there is currently little consensus about the computations underlying confidence judgements in perceptual decisions. To better understand these mechanisms, we addressed the extent to which confidence is informed by a naturalistic prior distribution.
