Long double-stranded (ds)RNA, a potent stimulator of type I interferon and the innate immune response. In the present study, we demonstrated, for the first time, the efficacy of cationic polystyrene latex nanostructures (clNPs) as a dsRNA carrier, improving cellular delivery and robustly potentiating the immunostimulatory capacity of dsRNA in the ovarian cancer cell line SKOV3. The clNPs complexed with an in vitro transcribed dsRNA molecule, were bound by SKOV3 cells, and had increased cellular association compared to uncomplexed clNPs.

Morphological and functional characterization of the oyster circulating hemocytes: Cell types and phagocytosis activity.

Fish Shellfish Immunol Rep

December 2023

Departamento de Biologia Molecular, Centro de Ciências Exatas e da Natureza, Universidade Federal da Paraíba - Campus I, 58051-900, João Pessoa, PB, Brazil.

Hemocytes are the circulating cells of the hemolymph of oysters and are responsible for numerous physiological functions, including immune defense. The oyster is a native species inhabiting mangrove habitat and is of great commercial interest, cultured throughout the Brazilian coast, mainly in the north and northeast. Despite its commercial importance, little is known about its immunological aspects and defense cells, the hemocytes.

The role of surface charge in the interaction of nanoparticles with model pulmonary surfactants.

Inhaled nanoparticles traveling through the airways are able to reach the respiratory zone of the lungs. In such an event, the incoming particles first come into contact with the liquid lining the alveolar epithelium, the pulmonary surfactant. The pulmonary surfactant is composed of lipids and proteins that are assembled into large vesicular structures.

Unlabelled: Antiviral immunity in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster involves the broadly active intrinsic mechanism of RNA interference (RNAi) and virus-specific inducible responses. Here, using a panel of six viruses, we investigated the role of hemocytes and autophagy in the control of viral infections. Injection of latex beads to saturate phagocytosis, or genetic depletion of hemocytes, resulted in decreased survival and increased viral titers following infection with Cricket paralysis virus (CrPV), Flock House virus (FHV), and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) but had no impact on Drosophila C virus (DCV), Sindbis virus (SINV), and Invertebrate iridescent virus 6 (IIV6) infection.

Bacteria that invade human endothelial cells can be efficiently eliminated in phagolysosomes. We investigated the role of vesicle tethering exocyst complex in maturation and function of endothelial cell phagosomes harbouring staphylococci or latex beads. Exocyst complex proteins (Sec5, -8, -10, Exo70) together with recycling endosome marker Rab11 were detected in vesicles that dynamically interacted and seemingly fused with endothelial cell phagosomes.
