Article Abstract

Introduction: Antibiotics used for treatment of severe bacterial infections have been shown to exert effects on the inflammatory response in addition to their antibacterial effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the biological effects of endotoxin in a porcine model could be neutralized by tobramycin, and whether tobramycin or ceftazidime was able to modulate the inflammatory response.

Method: Thirteen piglets were subjected to endotoxin infusion at an initial rate of 4 microgram/kg per hour, which was reduced to 1 microgram/kg per hour after 30 min. Before endotoxin infusion, the animals received saline (n = 4), ceftazidime (n = 5), or tobramycin (n = 4) at clinically relevant doses. Physiological parameters were measured and blood samples were taken hourly for 6 hours for analysis of tumour necrosis factor-alpha, IL-6 and endotoxin concentrations.

Results: All of the animals exhibited physiological signs of severe sepsis without major differences between the groups. Plasma endotoxin concentration was stable after 1 hour. There were no differences in endotoxin concentration or initial tumour necrosis factor-alpha and IL-6 concentrations between the groups. At 6 hours the IL-6 concentration was significantly lower in the ceftazidime group than in the saline group (P < 0.05), and in both the ceftazidime and the tobramycin groups there were significantly greater reductions from peak values (P < 0.05).

Conclusion: There was no neutralization of the biological effects of endotoxin in this porcine model. However, our data indicate a possible anti-inflammatory effect exerted by both ceftazidime and tobramycin, which manifested as a significantly greater reduction in IL-6 in comparison with the untreated group.

Novel therapeutic interventions are required to address the critical antimicrobial resistance caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR-PA) infections. This study examines the impact of combining delafloxacin with antibiotics on MDR-PA isolated from various samples. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of delafloxacin, alone and in combination with other antibiotics, were determined against forty distinct MDR-PA isolates using the broth microdilution method.

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, School of Clinical Medicine, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of prophylactic nebulized antibiotics in preventing intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired pneumonia through a meta-analysis.

Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the potential reduction in the incidence of ICU-acquired pneumonia through prophylactic nebulized antibiotics were collected by searching the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from their inception to January 23, 2024. The primary endpoint was the incidence of ICU-acquired pneumonia, while the secondary endpoints included mortality, length of ICU stay, mechanical ventilation days, and nebulization-related side effects.

Nutrient conditions affect antimicrobial pharmacodynamics in .

Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research, Leiden University, Leiden, the Netherlands.

The infectious microenvironment in chronic respiratory tract infections is characterized by substantial variability in nutrient conditions, which may impact colonization and treatment response of pathogens. Metabolic adaptation of the cystic fibrosis (CF)-associated pathogen has been shown to lead to changes in antibiotic sensitivity. The impact of specific nutrients on the response to antibiotics is, however, poorly characterized.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess trends in microbiology profiles and antibiotic susceptibility among pediatric infectious keratitis cases in Southern California, United States.

Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of patients aged 18 years or younger diagnosed with infectious keratitis with a positive microbiology culture between 2006 and 2019 at a tertiary academic institution. Patient demographics, microbiology results, and antibiotic susceptibilities were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates bacterial species in a new pharmaceutical facility in 6th of October City, Egypt, focusing on their resistance patterns and phylogenetic relationships.
  • All bacterial isolates were sensitive to Levofloxacin, but five Gram-positive and one Gram-negative multidrug-resistant strains were identified, raising concerns about potential contamination in drug manufacturing.
  • Disinfectants tested were mostly effective, with Clorox showing the best results against biofilms, while Dettol was less effective and only bacteriostatic, indicating the need for careful selection of disinfectants in cleanroom environments.
