Possible mechanisms by which the intestinal contents may influence afferent nerve fibres in the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa are discussed in this brief review. After addressing intestinal epithelial permeability, endocrine and brush cells are discussed, as well as enterocytes, as sensors for luminal microbes.

The carboxymethyl curdlan-quercetin conjugate (CMCD-QUE) was synthesized to stabilize curcumin (CUR) -loaded Pickering emulsions. The physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and prebiotic activity of CMCD-QUE were investigated. The effects of different concentrations of CMCD-QUE on CUR-loaded emulsions were also explored.

Reproducing intestinal cells in vitro is important in pharmaceutical research and drug development. Caco-2 cells and human iPS cell-derived intestinal epithelial cells are widely used, but few evaluation systems can mimic the complex crypt-villus-like structure. We attempted to generate intestinal cells mimicking the three-dimensional structure from human iPS cells.

Hypothesis: Solubilization is a fundamental process that underpins various technologies in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. However, knowledge of the location, orientation and interactions of solubilized molecules in the micelles is still limited. We expect all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to improve the molecular-level understanding of solubilization and to enable its in silico prediction.

The structural disruption of intestinal barrier and excessive reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) generation are two intertwined factors that drive the occurrence and development of ulcerative colitis (UC). Synchronously restoring the intestinal barrier and mitigating excess RONS is a promising strategy for UC management, but its treatment outcomes are still hindered by low drug accumulation and retention in colonic lesions. Inspired by intestine colonizing bacterium, we developed a mucoadhesive probiotic -mimic entinostat-loaded hollow mesopores prussian blue (HMPB) nanotherapeutic (AM@HMPB@E) for UC-targeted therapy via repairing intestinal barrier and scavenging RONS.

Aims: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is composed of distinct sub-regions, which exhibit segment-specific differences in microbial colonization and (patho)physiological characteristics. Gut microbes can be collectively considered as an active endocrine organ. Microbes produce metabolites, which can be taken up by the host and can actively communicate with the immune cells in the gut lamina propria with consequences for cardiovascular health.
