The most common parameters used to evaluate sperm quality are motility rate and duration and fertilization ability. In this study, chemical and biochemical parameters of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) sperm were investigated to find an alternative method for evaluating sperm fertilization ability before and after cryopreservation. The biochemical and chemical analyses were performed with fresh and frozen-thawed sperm and seminal plasma. To cryopreserve sperm, 250-microl straws were used. Fertilization ability was evaluated by inseminating eggs (obtained from hormonally stimulated females) with fresh and cryopreserved sperm. The results revealed a linear relationship (P < 0.05) between semen fertilization capacity and some seminal plasma (beta-D-glucuronidase activity, potassium concentration) and sperm (ATP concentration, aspartate aminotransferase activity) parameters. Variations in semen fertilization rate could be best described by two multiple regression models: one including the sperm parameters and another including the seminal plasma parameters. For practical application, the use of simple regression models is of value. Fertilization rate in both fresh and cryopreserved sperm was reliably predicted by determining the ATP concentration or the beta-D-glucuronidase activity or both.

Background: Probiotics could decrease irinotecan-induced diarrhea due to the reduction of intestinal beta-d-glucuronidase activity. This study included a combined analysis of two clinical trials aimed to determine the effectiveness of the probiotics in the prophylaxis of irinotecan-induced diarrhea in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients.
Methods: This combined analysis included 46 patients with CRC enrolled in the Probio-SK-003 (NCT01410955) and 233 patients from Probio-SK-005 (NCT02819960) starting a new line of irinotecan-based therapy with identical eligibility criteria.

The development of a robust chemical toolbox to interrogate the activity of heparanase-1 (HPSE-1), an endo-β-d-glucuronidase and the only known enzyme that cleaves heparan sulfate (HS), has become critically important. The primary function of HPSE-1, cleaving HS side chains from heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs), regulates the integrity of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the bioavailability of active, heparan sulfate-binding partners such as enzymes, growth factors, chemokines, and cytokines. HPSE-1 enzymatic activity is strictly regulated and has been found to play fundamental roles in pathophysiological processes.

HPSE-1 functions to remodel the ECM and thereby disseminate cells, liberate HS-bound bioactive molecules, and release biologically active HS fragments. Being the only known enzyme for the cleavage of HS, HPSE-1 regulates a number of fundamental cellular processes including cell migration, cytokine regulation, angiogenesis, and wound healing.

Intense rainfall and snowmelt events may affect the safety of drinking water, as large quantities of fecal material can be discharged from storm or sewage overflows or washed from the catchment into drinking water sources. This study used β-d-glucuronidase activity (GLUC) with microbial source tracking (MST) markers: human, bovine, porcine mitochondrial DNA markers (mtDNA) and human-associated Bacteroidales HF183 and chemical source tracking (CST) markers including caffeine, carbamazepine, theophylline and acetaminophen, pathogens (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, adenovirus, rotavirus and enterovirus), water quality indicators (Escherichia coli, turbidity) and hydrometeorological data (flowrate, precipitation) to assess the vulnerability of 3 drinking water intakes (DWIs) and identify sources of fecal contamination.
