Postural stability measures as diagnostic tools for chronic ankle instability: a comprehensive assessment.

BMC Sports Sci Med Rehabil

January 2025

Department of Physiotherapy, School of Rehabilitation, Tehran University of Medical Science, Enghelab St, Pich-e-Shemiran, Tehran, Iran.

Background: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is characterized by recurrent sprains and persistent symptoms, which impair postural control. This study evaluates the diagnostic utility of various linear and nonlinear postural stability measures in distinguishing individuals with CAI from healthy controls.

Methods: Postural stability was assessed in 24 participants (12 with CAI and 12 healthy controls) using a force platform under four conditions: hard surface with eyes open, hard surface with eyes closed, soft surface with eyes open, and soft surface with eyes closed.

Periapical bone edema volume in 3D MRI is positively correlated with bone architecture changes.

Insights Imaging

January 2025

Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, University Hospital of Zurich, University Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Objectives: To compare and correlate bone edema volume detected by 3D-short-tau-inversion-recovery (STIR) sequence to osseous decay detected by a T1-based sequence and conventional panoramic radiography (OPT).

Materials And Methods: Patients with clinical evidence of apical periodontitis were included retrospectively and received OPT as well as MRI of the viscerocranium including a 3D-STIR and a 3D-T1 gradient echo sequence. Bone edema was visualized using the 3D-STIR sequence and periapical hard tissue changes were evaluated using the 3D-T1 sequence.

Background: Due to their acidic nature, certain medications can have deleterious effects on tooth enamel. Fluoride is a popular method for reversing these effects. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of acidic medications, specifically anti-asthmatic drugs and vitamin C tablets, on enamel surfaces and to investigate the effects of fluoride following drug exposure.

Site-selective photo-crosslinking for the characterisation of transient ubiquitin-like protein-protein interactions.

Non-covalent protein-protein interactions are one of the most fundamental building blocks in cellular signalling pathways. Despite this, they have been historically hard to identify using conventional methods due to their often weak and transient nature. Using genetic code expansion and incorporation of commercially available unnatural amino acids, we have developed a highly accessible method whereby interactions between biotinylated ubiquitin-like protein (UBL) probes and their binding partners can be stabilised using ultraviolet (UV) light-induced crosslinks.

Minimizing Delay and Power Consumption at the Edge.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Institute of Theoretical & Applied Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IITiS-PAN), 44-100 Gliwice, Poland.

Edge computing systems must offer low latency at low cost and low power consumption for sensors and other applications, including the IoT, smart vehicles, smart homes, and 6G. Thus, substantial research has been conducted to identify optimum task allocation schemes in this context using non-linear optimization, machine learning, and market-based algorithms. Prior work has mainly focused on two methodologies: (i) formulating non-linear optimizations that lead to NP-hard problems, which are processed via heuristics, and (ii) using AI-based formulations, such as reinforcement learning, that are then tested with simulations.
