Does a biological invasion modify host immune responses to parasite infection?

R Soc Open Sci

January 2025

Evolution & Ecology Research Centre, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW 2052, Australia.

Biological invasions can disrupt the close and longstanding coevolved relationships between host and parasites. At the same time, the shifting selective forces acting on demography during invasion can result in rapid evolution of traits in both host and parasite. Hosts at the invasion front may reduce investment into costly immune defences and redistribute those resources to other fitness-enhancing traits.

Benralizumab is an anti-IL-5 receptor alpha monoclonal antibody that induces the near-complete depletion of eosinophils. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term safety and effectiveness of benralizumab in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) over an extended 48-month follow-up period, offering one of the longest real-world perspectives available. This was a single-arm, retrospective, observational, multicenter study involving 123 SEA patients treated with benralizumab at a dosage of 30 mg every 4 weeks for the first 3 doses and then every 8 weeks.

Celiac disease, non-celiac wheat sensitivity, wheat allergy - clinical and diagnostic aspects.

Semin Immunol

January 2025

Celiac Disease Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, Tampere University, Tampere, Finland; Tampere Centre for Child, Adolescent and Maternal Health Research, Tampere University and Tampere University Hospital, Tampere, Finland; The Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa, Finland; The University Consortium of Seinäjoki, Seinäjoki, Finland. Electronic address:

In recent years, wheat- and gluten-free diets have increased in demand due to reported increases in various conditions reported to be driven by ingredients of these food products. Celiac disease, wheat allergy and non-celiac wheat sensitivity constitute the three main categories of wheat-related disorders. Celiac disease is a well-characterized immune-mediated disease caused by immune reaction against specific gliadin epitopes, the main protein in wheat.

Purpose: Although studies have evaluated benralizumab, a monoclonal IL-5 receptor α antibody in severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA), in real-world settings, additional evidence is needed to further characterize its effectiveness in specific patient populations. Our study aimed to evaluate asthma control over 56 weeks in patients treated with benralizumab in Swiss real-world settings.

Patients And Methods: Conducted across 13 centres, this prospective, observational, non-interventional study involved 73 adults with physician confirmed SEA.

BACKGROUND Hepatic lesion in a young woman can lead to multiple diagnostic hypotheses, mainly infection and tumor. Crohn's disease (CD) is hardly evoked by clinicians but is reportedly associated with liver damage, especially diffuse granulomas and aseptic abscess. IgA deficiency has been associated with celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease, including CD.
