Evolutionary genomic approaches provide powerful tools to understand variation in and evolution of physiological processes. Untargeted genomic or transcriptomic screens can identify functionally annotated candidate genes linked to specific physiological processes, in turn suggesting evolutionary roles for these processes. Such studies often aim to inform modeling of the potential of natural populations to adapt to climate change, but these models are most accurate when evolutionary responses are repeatable, and thus predictable.

Previous studies have suggested that, during prolonged cold exposure, shivering thermogenesis may gradually be attenuated, supposedly reflecting a state of central fatigue (aka 'thermoregulatory fatigue') provoked by extended shivering activity, that precipitates hypothermia. The purpose of this study was to revisit the validity of this notion. Twelve noncold-acclimatized men participated in three ∼10-h sessions, during which they performed repeatedly three 120-min cold-water immersions.

Sphagnum moss is the dominant plant genus in northern peatlands responsible for long-term carbon accumulation. Sphagnum hosts diverse microbial communities (microbiomes), and its phytobiome (plant host + constituent microbiome + environment) plays a key role in nutrient acquisition along with carbon cycling. Climate change can modify the Sphagnum-associated microbiome, resulting in enhanced host growth and thermal acclimation as previously shown in warming experiments.
