To study the interaction of human pathogens with their host target structures, human tissue models based on primary cells are considered suitable. Complex tissue models of the human airways have been used as infection models for various viral and bacterial pathogens. The Gram-negative bacterium is of relevant clinical interest since whooping cough has developed into a resurgent infectious disease.

The human pathogen targets the respiratory epithelium and causes whooping cough. Its virulence factor adenylate cyclase toxin (CyaA) plays an important role in the course of infection. Previous studies on the impact of CyaA on human epithelial cells have been carried out using cell lines derived from the airways or the intestinal tract.

Objectives: The published experience with advanced broncho-plastic procedures performed with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support is very limited. We examined our results to assess the risks and benefits of this approach.
Methods: We retrospectively analysed all patients with thoracic malignancies who underwent complex tracheo-bronchial reconstruction under ECMO support in our department between 2001 and 2013.

Congenital anomalies of bronchial division are extremely rare. Presence of complete cartilaginous rings in bronchial tree with co-existent bronchial division anomalies make surgical correction more challenging, and needs a well-structured surgical pathway. We report a case of complex airway pattern similar to Christmas-tree appearance with associated stenosis due to complete rings, treated by modified sliding tracheoplasty with a successful outcome.

Human airway epithelial (hAE) cell cultures are instrumental for studying basic and applied aspects of respiratory tract biology, disease, and therapy. When primary epithelial cells from the human nasal passages or tracheo-bronchial airways are grown on porous supports at an air-liquid interface (ALI) they undergo mucociliary differentiation, reproducing both the in vivo morphology and key physiologic processes. These cultures are useful for studying basic biology, disease pathogenesis, gene therapy and aerosol administration of drugs.
