A simple two-step drug encapsulation method was developed to obtain biocompatible magnetic nanocarriers for the potential targeted treatment of diverse diseases. The nanodevice consists of a magnetite core coated with chitosan (Chit@MNPs) as a platform for diclofenac (Dic) loading as a model drug (Dic-Chit@MNPs). Mechanistic and experimental conditions related to drug incorporation and quantification are further addressed.

Severe vitamin D deficiency in patients with Kawasaki disease: a potential role in the risk to develop heart vascular abnormalities?

Clin Rheumatol

July 2016

Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine and Department of Biomedicine, Division of Rheumatology, Transition Clinic, University of Florence, Viale Pieraccini 18, 50139, Florence, Italy.

Twenty-five-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)-vitamin D) is crucial in the regulation of immunologic processes, but-although its deficiency has been reported in patients with different rheumatological disorders-no data are available for Kawasaki disease (KD). The goals of this study were to assess the serum levels of 25(OH)-vitamin D in children with KD and evaluate the relationship with the eventual occurrence of KD-related vascular abnormalities. We evaluated serum 25(OH)-vitamin D levels in 79 children with KD (21 females, 58 males, median age 4.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by tissue injury mediated by inflammatory mechanisms. Nonetheless, several acute-phase proteins may remain normal or are decreased. We explore the association of diverse biomarkers with selected clinical features, disease activity, and organ damage in SLE.

Biological therapies, such as etanercept, adalimumab and infliximab, have demonstrated good efficacy in inducing rheumatoid arthritis to low disease activity levels. Nevertheless, their cost, as well as the related risk of side effects, especially in long-term therapies, are still high. Furthermore, there is a good deal of evidence proving loss of efficacy of such therapies in the long term, often necessitating the shift from one specific anti-TNF biological treatment to another.
