A prospective study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of calcium sodium alginate fibre (Kaltostat) to petrolatum gauze impregnated with bismuth tribromophenate (Xeroform) for the control of epistaxes that require hospital admission. Forty patients presenting with severe epistaxis requring hospital admission were treated with either Kaltostat or Xeroform nasal packs. Allocation to either treatment group was made randomly. The composition of each group in terms of age, sex distribution, aetiology of epistaxis and severity of bleed was not significantly different. There was no significant difference in the efficacy or patient acceptability of either therapeutic agent. It is concluded that calcium sodium alginate fibre should be considered as an acceptable alternative to traditional gauze packing.

Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to realize low-cost, high-performance and large-scale utilization of cementitious materials prepared from bulk solid wastes, this paper constructs a set of composite cementitious system based on alkaline activation of slag and fly ash (FA) by calcium carbide slag (CCS) and synergistic activation of sodium sulfate (NaSO) as a chemical dopant. The influence of factors such as solid waste type, mixing ratio, and NaSO content on the mechanical properties of composite cementitious systems was investigated by assessing compressive strength and analyzing microstructure using XRD, SEM-EDS, and FTIR. The test results indicate that CCS and NaSO exert significant influences on the strength of the composite cementitious system.

Despite extensive research on the use of salts to enhance micellar growth, numerous questions remain regarding the impact of ionic exchange and molecular structure on charge neutralization. This study looks into how certain cations (Na, Ca, and Mg) affect the structure of a cocamidopropyl betaine CAPB and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate SDBS surfactant mixture, aiming toward applications in targeted delivery systems. The mixture consists of a zwitterionic surfactant, cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), combined in varying molar ratios at a total concentration of 200 mM.

Canadian children consume a significant proportion of daily foods at school, do not benefit from any federal school food program, and have historically inadequate diets. Assessment of dietary intakes at school can inform policy discussions for the design, funding, and delivery of school-based nutrition interventions. The objectives were to examine the most recent nationally representative dietary intake data of Canadian children at school by (i) location of food preparation, (ii) meal occasion, and (iii) as a proportion of total daily intakes.

Background: To investigate the changes of b2-microglobulin and electrolyte in different stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the value of evaluating prognosis.
Methods: A retrospective study was undertaken on 120 patients diagnosed with COPD and treated at our respiratory department between February 1, 2020, and January 31, 2023. These patients were classified into three groups based on the GOLD classification: mild (FEV1 > 81%), moderate (51% < FEV1 ≤ 80%), and severe (FEV1 ≤ 50%).

Biodiesel presents a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, yet traditional homogeneous catalysts like sodium and potassium hydroxide face challenges with separation and reuse. Calcium oxide (CaO) is an effective heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production, but its chemical instability under reaction conditions restricts its long-term performance. This study introduces MOF-mediated synthesis (MOFMS) of heterogeneous catalysts, specifically CaO@ZnO and ZnO@CaO nanocomposites, from inexpensive and non-toxic metal salts and linkers in water.
