A 58-year-old man diagnosed as having acanthosis nigricans symmetrically distributed on the face, neck, hands, navel and external genitals, was admitted to our department for further investigation of abnormal chest films. Bronchoscopy revealed squamous cell carcinoma of left S6 and solitary bronchial papilloma of left S3. After left pneumonectomy, facial hyperpigmentation improved slightly. About half of the reported cases of acanthosis nigricans are accompanied by various kinds of malignant neoplasms, mostly adenocarcinomas of the digestive system. The association with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung in our case appears to be unique. Only 16 cases of solitary bronchial papilloma, including our case which had the smallest diameter of 2 mm, have been reported in Japan. While it is suggested that malignant neoplasms contribute to abnormal epidermal growth such as acanthosis nigricans, a causal relationship between squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and bronchial papilloma cannot be established.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic inflammation, airway obstruction, and lung damage, often triggered by cigarette smoke. Dysregulated autophagy and inflammation are key contributors to its progression. Although double-stranded RNA-binding protein Staufen homolog 1 (STAU1), a multifunctional protein primarily involved in mRNA transport and localization, is identified as a potential biomarker, its role in COPD pathogenesis remains unclear.

miRNA Expression Profile in Primary Limbal Epithelial Cells of Aniridia Patients.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

January 2025

Dr. Rolf M. Schwiete Center for Limbal Stem Cell and Congenital Aniridia Research, Homburg/Saar, Germany, Saarland University, Homburg/Saar, Germany.

Purpose: This study evaluates the microRNA (miRNA) expression profile in primary limbal epithelial cells (pLECs) of patients with aniridia.

Methods: Primary human LECs were sampled and isolated from 10 patients with aniridia and 10 healthy donors. The miRNA profile was analyzed using miRNA microarrays.

PRMT1-Mediated Arginine Methylation Promotes Corneal Epithelial Wound Healing via Epigenetic Regulation of ANXA3.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Visual Science, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, China.

Purpose: Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) is an integral constituent of numerous cellular processes. However, its role in corneal epithelial wound healing (CEWH) remains unclear. This study investigates the impact of PRMT1 on cellular mechanisms underlying corneal epithelial repair and its potential to improve wound healing outcomes.
