[Vaccination in children with neurologic diseases].

Cesk Pediatr

Klinika dĕtské neurologie 2. lékarské fakulty Univerzity Karlovy, Praha.

Published: November 1992

The authors explain the main risks of immunization of children with affections of the central nervous system. For practical reasons the diseases are divided into four groups: 1. Perinatal affections and developmental diseases of the CNS. 2. Neurodegenerative and metabolic affections of the CNS. 3. Acquired affections of the CNS. 4. Paroxysmal diseases. The objective of the paper is to reduce the risk of postvaccination complications in children with serious affections of the CNS, while ensuring the contemporary necessary vaccination rate of the population.

Objectives: Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) haploinsufficiency is a rare genetic condition characterized by development of immune cytopenia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and/or lymphoproliferative disorder, as well as multiple autoimmunity. Treatment with abatacept was shown to alleviate autoimmune conditions, yet its long-lasting impact on bone marrow function remains undetermined.

Methods: We here present the case of a now 39-year-old woman with CTLA-4 haploinsufficiency with predominant CNS affection, yet multiorgan autoimmunity and lymphopenia.

Central involvement in peripheral disease: melanopsin pathway impairment in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

Brain Commun

June 2024

Department of Neurology, Motor and Cognition Group, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin (CBF), 12203 Berlin, Germany.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) compromises functions of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Recently, however, symptoms such as cognitive deficits, visual dysfunction and circadian disorders were reported, compatible with additional involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in CIDP. Against this background, we were interested in the functional state of melanopsin-expressing retinal ganglion cells (mRGCs) as a potential biomarker for sleep-wake abnormalities and CNS involvement in CIDP.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinocerebellar ataxia 4 (SCA4) is an adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder linked to chromosome 16q22.1, characterized by ataxia, polyneuropathy, and various neurological symptoms that were previously poorly understood.* -
  • A research study on three Swedish families employed various diagnostic methods, including genetic testing and neuroimaging, revealing new features such as dysautonomia, motor neuron involvement, and significant brain atrophy.* -
  • The study identified a novel genetic mutation, a GGC expansion in the ZFHX3 gene, as the cause of SCA4, expanding its clinical profile to include symptoms like dysautonomia and other neuromuscular

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSVE) is a potentially fatal infectious central nervous system (CNS) disorder. Thus, early detection is critical in determining the case's fate. Clinical history and examination, brain computed tomography, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), and lumbar puncture have been used to establish a diagnosis.

Spectrum of MRI findings in central nervous system affection in Lyme neuroborreliosis.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Clinic of Neurology and Neurophysiology, Medical Center - University of Freiburg, Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Breisacher Str. 64, 79106, Freiburg, Germany.

Affections of the central nervous system (CNS) rarely occur in Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). CNS manifestations can have residual neurological symptoms despite antibiotic treatment. We explored the spectrum of CNS affections in patients with LNB in a tertiary care center in a region endemic for Lyme borreliosis.
