Mycobacteria infections are caused by species of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTB) and other species called Non-Tuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM). Identification of mycobacteria species is very important to define treatment and it can be achieved by direct culture. However, the lack of clear protocols regarding the use of culture or molecular tests on specimens diagnosed with granulomatous lesions causes delays in the diagnosis of the etiological agents and, consequently, the definition of the right treatment.

Background: In 2021, over one million children developed tuberculosis, resulting in 214 000 deaths, largely due to inadequate diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis is limited in most high-burden countries because services are highly centralised at secondary/tertiary levels and are managed in a vertical, non-integrated way. To improve case detection and treatment among children, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends decentralised and integrated tuberculosis care models.

The Republic of Chad has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world. With scarce resources to respond to competing demands, pragmatic evidence-based planning tools are needed to aid planning and support priority setting. This action research aimed to develop a tool to support maternal health (MH) planning and prioritization decisions and identify priority regions/provinces for intervention in Chad based on aggregate MH coverage gap scores (Target-Coverage=Coverage Gap).

Background: Mycobacterial culture is routinely performed to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) in Canada. Globally, meta-analyses suggest that up to 2% of positive cultures are falsely positive for due to laboratory cross-contamination. Five patients from distinct clinical institutions in Montréal were diagnosed with culture-positive TB as their clinical samples were processed in a centralized mycobacteria laboratory.
