Scleral Lens Use in the Management of Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid.

Eye Contact Lens

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology (B.S., A.S., S.B., J.K.), Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA; and Emory University School of Medicine (S.C.), Atlanta, GA.

Purpose: Symptom management in Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid (OCP) is challenging because of the progressive factors of dry eye, scarring, trichiasis, and vision impairment. We set out to evaluate the benefits and therapeutic effects of scleral contact lenses in the management of OCP.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed over a database of 20 patients (36 eyes) fitted with scleral lenses (SL) at the Department of Ophthalmology, Emory University from May 2018 to April 2021.

Background: Conventional post-stroke edema management strategies are limitedly successful as in multiple cases of hemorrhagic transformation is being reported. Clinically, acute-ischemic-stroke (AIS) intervention by endovascular mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown benefits by altering various signaling pathways. Our previous studies have reported that intra-arterial administration of 1*10 MSCs (IA-MSCs) were beneficial in alleviating post-stroke edema by modulating PKCδ/MMP9/AQP4 axis and helpful in preserving the integrity of blood-brain-barrier (BBB).

Background: Managing lower calyceal stones poses significant challenges. Flexible ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy (FURSL) are standard techniques for treating large stones (10-20 mm).

Objective: This study evaluates the role of the T-tilt position (45-degree Trendelenburg with a 45-degree lateral tilt against the side of the stone) and hydrodilatation of the lower calyx with 50 cc saline injection as needed in optimizing stone-free rates and safety during FURSL for lower calyceal stones.

Purpose: Mobile health plays an important role in providing individualized information about the health status of patients. Limited information exists on intensive care unit (ICU) patients with the risk of suffering from the post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), summarizing long-term physical, mental and cognitive impairment. This web-based survey study aims to identify specific needs of former ICU patients for utilizing a newly developed, so called Post-Intensive Care Outcome Surveillance (PICOS) app to collect relevant PICS-related parameters.

Anorectal fistulas remain one of the most challenging conditions in colorectal surgery and require precise anatomical knowledge for successful management. This comprehensive review synthesizes the current evidence on the anatomical foundations of fistula development and treatment, particularly focusing on the cryptoglandular hypothesis and its clinical implications. A systematic analysis of the recent literature has examined the relationship between anatomical structures and fistula formation, classification systems, diagnostic modalities, and therapeutic approaches.
