Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a growing global health concern and its prevalence and severity are increasing steadily. While bacterial endotoxin translocation into the portal circulation is a well-established key factor, recent evidence highlights the critical role of sterile inflammation, triggered by diverse stimuli, in alcohol-induced liver injury. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the complex interactions within the hepatic microenvironment in ALD.

Hydrocele of the Canal of Nuck is a rare inguinal-scrotal swelling that occurs primarily as a chronic painful lump in childhood or in young women. Here, we present a rare case of the same, presenting at an extreme of age and with a short history. An 85-year-old female patient presented with a progressive inguinal swelling for 2 months in a known case of decompensated cirrhosis of liver in form of ascites and portal cavernoma.

Molecular pathological characteristics and mechanisms of the liver in metabolic disease-susceptible transgenic pigs.

Life Sci

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, Institute of Animal Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

Aims: This study aimed to explore the molecular pathological mechanisms of the liver in metabolic disease-susceptible transgenic pigs via multiomics analysis.

Materials And Methods: The triple-transgenic (PNPLA3-GIPR-hIAPP) pig model (TG pig) was successfully constructed in our laboratory via the CRISPR/Cas9 technique previously described. Wild-type (WT) pigs and TG pigs after 2 or 12 months of high-fat and high-sucrose diet (HFHSD) induction (WT2, TG2, WT12, and TG12 groups, respectively) were used as materials.

The Natural History of Portal Venous System Aneurysms.

J Vasc Surg Venous Lymphat Disord

December 2024

Division of Vascular Surgery, UPMC, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Department of Surgery, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Electronic address:

Background: Portal venous system aneurysms (PVA) are increasingly diagnosed on cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) imaging. However, the natural history of these aneurysms is poorly understood and reports are limited to small case series.

Methods: Terms relevant to PVA were searched in radiology reports (2010-2022) with PVA presence confirmed by manual review.

Computational exploration of injection strategies for improving medicine distribution in the liver.

Comput Biol Med

December 2024

Faculty of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering, University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. Electronic address:

Background And Objectives: The liver, a vital metabolic organ, is always susceptible to various diseases that ultimately lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, acute liver failure, chronic liver failure, and even cancer. Optimal and specific medicine delivery in various diseases, hepatectomy, shunt placement, and other surgical interventions to reduce liver damage, transplantation, optimal preservation, and revival of the donated organ all rely on a complete understanding of perfusion and mass transfer in the liver. This study aims to simulate the computational fluid dynamics of perfusion and the temporal-spatial distribution of a medicine in a healthy liver to evaluate the hemodynamic characteristics of flow and medicine transport with the purpose of more effective liver treatment.
