Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Impairment: Key Drivers in Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Ageing Res Rev

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Veterinary Public Health and Safety, Key Laboratory of Animal Epidemiology of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, National Animal Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Laboratory, College of Veterinary Medicine, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are critical factors in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The complex interplay between these factors exacerbates neuronal damage and accelerates disease progression. In neurodegenerative diseases, mitochondrial dysfunction impairs ATP production and promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is often more susceptible to damage compared to nuclear DNA. This is due to its localization in the mitochondrial matrix, where a large portion of reactive oxygen species are produced. Mitochondria do not have histones and mtDNA is only slightly protected by histone-like proteins and is believed to have less efficient repair mechanisms.

Although a giant Egyptian domestic non-migratory duck breed is phenotypically identical to the migratory Mallard, yet it is three times larger. The current study sought to determine the genetic and metabolic differences between this duck and Mallard, which arrives in Egypt in September for wintering and departs in March. Mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop) was extracted, amplified, sequenced, and analyzed in both ducks.

Double-stranded RNA orbivirus disrupts the DNA-sensing cGAS-sting axis to prevent type I IFN induction.

Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) is a DNA sensing cellular receptor that induces IFN-I transcription in response to pathogen and host derived cytosolic DNA and can limit the replication of some RNA viruses. Some viruses have nonetheless evolved mechanisms to antagonize cGAS sensing. In this study, we evaluated the interaction between Bluetongue virus (BTV), the prototypical dsRNA virus of the Orbivirus genus and the Sedoreoviridae family, and cGAS.

[Physiological and pathophysiological changes of the ageing lung].

Z Gerontol Geriatr

January 2025

Institut für Lungenforschung, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Deutsches Zentrum für Lungenforschung (DZL), Marburg, Deutschland.

Background: Due to age-related changes the lung function decreases. At the same time there is an increase in pulmonary diseases that lead to restrictions in mobility and autonomy.

Research Question: What are the underlying changes in lung ageing? To what extent do they affect lung function and are there factors that can be influenced?

Method: Literature search.
