Reinforcing chemically treated human hair with citric acid.

Int J Cosmet Sci

January 2025

L'Oréal Research & Innovation, Aulnay-sous-Bois, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how citric acid (CA) reinforces chemically treated hair by evaluating its effects on different treatment types like bleaching and perming.
  • Various physical and chemical testing methods showed that CA significantly enhances hair's structural integrity, increases its mechanical properties, and reduces harmful calcium levels in the hair.
  • Results suggest that the effectiveness of CA is influenced by the specific type of prior chemical treatment, with implications for improving hair care products that target damaged hair.

Bacterial contamination of mobile handwashing stations in hospital settings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Antimicrob Resist Infect Control

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation, KU Leuven, Louvain, Belgium.

Background: As part of the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile handwashing stations (mHWS) were deployed in healthcare facilities in low-resource settings. We assessed mHWS in hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for contamination with Gram-negative bacteria.

Methods: Water and soap samples of in-use mHWS in hospitals in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi were quantitatively cultured for Gram-negative bacteria which were tested for antibiotic susceptibility.

Depending on the soybean processing plant, gums and soapstocks may be added back to soybean meal during soybean processing. Despite potential effects on soybean meal quality, there is limited information available on the composition and variation in soybean by-products and the resulting soybean meal if by-products are added back during processing. A total of 36 soybean by-product samples from 14 plants across 8 different companies were examined in an industry survey evaluating the composition and variation of soybean gums and soapstocks across the United States.

A novel sanitizer tablet containing clove essential oil (CO) microemulsion was developed. A preformulation study using nuclear magnetic resonance and thermal analyses showed component compatibility. The main components of the samples remained intact despite a color change, probably due to a strong acid-base interaction between eugenol and diethanolamine.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study tested a mild chemical formulation (3.2% citric acid, 1% urea, 70% ethanol) on two non-enveloped viruses, Human Adenovirus 5 and Feline Calicivirus, revealing the formulation caused significant damage through a synergistic effect, resulting in capsid collapse for FCV and instability for HAdV5.
  • * The results indicate that different non-enveloped viruses might undergo unique morphological changes during inactivation, suggesting that understanding these pathways can help improve disinfectant formulations for broader applications
