The thermal behaviours of hydrogenated egg lecithin (PC) and cholesterol (C) in anhydrous form and in aqueous dispersions were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The role of C in phase transitions of C-PC mixtures prepared by physical mixing or coprecipitating from chloroform has been examined. C underwent a phase transition at 34 degrees C and a second one at 76-78 degrees C which depended on the thermal history of the samples. C lowered the gel to liquid crystalline phase transition temperature (Tt) of the aqueous dispersions prepared from C-PC coprecipitates, broadened the endothermic peak at the Tt, and at 1:1 molar ratio the C-PC system did not undergo the phase transition. The C-PC interaction was observed below the Tt. In aqueous dispersions prepared from C-PC physical mixtures, C did not influence the phase transition and acted like an inert diluent. Pellets prepared from C-PC mixtures formed myelin bodies as a result of their erosion in 0.185 M borate buffer (pH 7.4) at below Tt, but the thermal behaviours of these myelin bodies were different for pellets prepared differently. Addition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) (10%, w/w) to the physical mixtures or coprecipitates of C-PC, or to PC alone did not show any effect on the thermal behaviours of their aqueous dispersions at the Tt.

Despite a lot of efforts devoted to construct efficient microbiomes, there are still major obstacles to moving from the lab to industrial applications due to the inapplicability of existing technologies or limited understanding of microbiome variation regularity. Here we show a domestication strategy to cultivate an effciient and resilient functional microbiome for addressing phenolic wastewater challenges, which involves directional domestication in shaker, laboratory water test in small-scale, gas test in pilot scale, water test in pilot scale, and engineering application in industrial scale. The domestication process includes the transition from water to gas, which provided complex transient environment for screening of a more adaptable and robust microbiome, thereby mitigating the performance disparities encountered when transitioning from laboratory experimentation to industrial engineering applications.

The translation of cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) into biogenic gene delivery systems is limited by relatively inefficient loading strategies. In this work, the loading of various nucleic acids into small EVs via their spontaneous hybridization with preloaded non-lamellar liquid crystalline lipid nanoparticles (LCNPs), forming hybrid EVs (HEVs) is described. It is demonstrated that LCNPs undergo pH-dependent structural transitions from inverse hexagonal (H) phases at pH 5 to more disordered non-lamellar phases, possibly inverse micellar (L) or sponge (L) phases, at pH 7.

Hypothesis: Ellipsoidal particles confined at liquid interfaces exhibit complex self-assembly due to quadrupolar capillary interactions, favouring either tip-to-tip or side-to-side configurations. However, predicting and controlling which structure forms remains challenging. We hypothesize that introducing a polymer-based soft shell around the particles will modulate these capillary interactions, providing a means to tune the preferred self-assembly configuration based on particle geometry and shell properties.

Significant progress has been achieved with diversity of short peptide supramolecular assemblies. However, their programmable phase modulation by single stimulus remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a dipeptide supramolecular system undergoes sequentially coupled phase transitions upon hydrogen bonding association and dissociation triggered by a single fatty acid.
