Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused unprecedented disruptions in the lives of people, inducing a change in social behavior because of quarantine and physical distancing measures for health safety. It greatly affected not only the general population but also the healthcare system, forcing healthcare providers and consumers to adjust from the traditional mode of in-person consultation to telemedicine to enable safe and prompt delivery of adequate and efficient patient care. A 35-year-old female was diagnosed with acromegaly secondary to pituitary macroadenoma, presenting as a 10-year history of weight gain, amenorrhea, hand and feet enlargement, coarse facial features, and bilateral vision loss.

Article Synopsis
  • Craniocerebral trauma significantly leads to death and disability, and decompressive craniectomy is a common emergency procedure to alleviate intracranial pressure, making cranial bone reconstruction essential for recovery.
  • * A study of 44 patients who underwent ultra-early cranioplasty with titanium mesh showed improvement in neurological scores post-surgery, although 42 patients experienced complications, including hydroaccumulation and hematocele.
  • * Prognostic factors affecting recovery included age and postoperative NIHSS scores, suggesting that while ultra-early cranioplasty can aid neurological recovery, careful monitoring for complications is crucial.

Daily life without cranial bone protection while awaiting cranioplasty: a qualitative study.

Acta Neurochir (Wien)

August 2024

Department of Medical Sciences, Neurosurgery, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Purpose: Decompressive craniectomy is occasionally performed as a life-saving neurosurgical intervention in patients with acute severe brain injury to reduce refractory intracranial hypertension. Subsequently, cranioplasty (CP) is performed to repair the skull defect. In the meantime, patients are living without cranial bone protection, and little is known about their daily life.

Nurse-led care versus neurologist-led care for long-term outcomes of patients who underwent craniotomy in traumatic brain injuries: an efficacy analysis.

Front Neurol

July 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Shanxi Bethune Hospital, Shanxi Academy of Medical Sciences, Third Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, Tongji Shanxi Hospital, Taiyuan, China.

Background: After craniotomy, patients require rehabilitation efforts for the recovery process, and neurologists are mostly engaged for that (in the management of post-craniotomy complications). However, neurologists are not always available for care after neurosurgery during follow-up (situation of our institute). The objectives of the study were to compare the effects of two different types of care (nurse-led and neurologist-led) on various long-term outcomes in patients who have undergone craniotomy due to traumatic brain injuries.

Decompressive Craniectomy in Patients with Malignant Stroke with Additional Vascular Territory.

World Neurosurg

September 2024

Department of Neurology, Psychology and Psychiatry, UNESP - São Paulo State University, Botucatu Medical School, Botucatu, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background: Decompressive craniectomy substantially reduces mortality and disability rates following a malignant stroke. This procedure remains a life-saving option, especially in contexts with little access to mechanical thrombectomy despite downward trends in the performance of decompressive craniectomy due to discussions on the acceptance of living with severe disabilities. However, the outcomes of the surgery in cases involving concomitant occlusion of anterior or posterior cerebral arteries have not been extensively studied.
