A novel method for the determination of carbocisteine (S-CMC), a mucolytic and expectorant drug with an acidic amino acid structure, was developed and validated, using non-suppressed ion-chromatographic system with conductimetric detection, and anion or cation exchange columns. Among the various combinations of column type and eluent composition tested, a cation exchange column with a 0.25 mM tri-fluoroacetic acid (TFA) as eluent in isocratic mode at 1.2 ml/min gave the best results. S-CMC was very well separated from all common amino acids (resolution > 2.6). The retention time was 3.5 min and the asymmetry factor 1.1. A linear calibration curve from 17 to 400 microg/ml (r = 0.99994), with a detection limit of 0.14 microg (5.6 microg/ml-25 microl injection volume) and a precision of 1.5% R.S.D. (100 microg/ml, n = 3) was achieved. The proposed method was applied for the determination of S-CMC content in intensely colored commercial formulations (syrups). No interference from excipients was found and the only pretreatment step was the appropriate dilution with the mobile phase. Recovery from standard additions was ranged from 96.0 to 104.9% and precision (R.S.D., n = 3) 1.8-3.6%.

Herein, a novel spectrofluorometric sensor is proposed for the sensitive analysis of two nonfluorescent mucolytic drugs, namely, acetylcysteine (ACT) and carbocisteine (CST), utilizing the newly synthesized 2-[(2-hydroxyethyl)-(2,8,10-trimethylpyrido[2',3':3,4]pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-4-yl)-amino]-ethanol as a fluorescence probe (Flu. Probe). This fluorophore exhibits fluorescence emission at 445 nm upon excitation at 275 nm.

Background: The efficacy and safety of mucolytics in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis or exacerbations of COPD have been reported. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of mucolytics in patients with stable COPD.
Methods: Reports from randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of mucolytics, including ambroxol, bromhexine, carbocisteine, erdosteine, fudosteine, l-methylcysteine, and N-acetylcysteine used in patients with stable COPD were searched for in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and the Igaku Cyuo Zasshi database.

To assess the risk of major birth defects after first-trimester exposure to carbocisteine and ambroxol during pregnancy, we conducted a prospective cohort study using counseling data for drug use during pregnancy provided by the Japan Drug Information Institute in Pregnancy and Toranomon Hospital. Counseling information, including drug usage and participants' demographic information, was collected between April 1988 and December 2017. Pregnancy outcome data, including major birth defects, were obtained using a questionnaire administered 1 month after delivery.
