In our screening of marine Streptomycetes for bioactive compounds, in addition to the known metabolites rabelomycin (1), fridamycin D (2b), N-benzylacetamide and N-(2'-phenylethyl)acetamide, two new anthracycline antibiotics designated as himalomycin A (2c) and B (2d) were isolated from the culture broth of the marine Streptomyces sp. isolate B6921. The structure of the new antibiotics was determined by comparison of the NMR data with those of fridamycin D (2b) and by detailed interpretation of mass, 1D and 2D NMR spectra.

The isolation and characterization of bioactive metabolites from species continue to represent a vital area of research, given their potential in natural product drug discovery. In this study, we characterize a new siderophore called legonoxamine I, together with a known compound, streptimidone, from the talented soil bacterium sp. MA37, using chromatographic techniques and spectroscopic analysis.

Geldanamycin, a benzoquinone ansa antibiotic, has been extensively applied in medical, agricultural, and health research areas due to its antitumor, antifungal, herbicidal, and antiradiation effects. In this study, an improvement of geldanamycin production by FIM18-0592 was first performed by protoplasts combined with UV mutagenesis and ribosome engineering technology, respectively. The results showed that strains induced by UV mutagenesis of protoplasts were superior to protoplasts treated with erythromycin in terms of the positive variability, average relative titer, and maximum relative titer, with values of 51.

Marine actinobacteria metabolites: unlocking new treatments for acne vulgaris.

Front Microbiol

January 2025

Doctoral Program of Biosciences, School of Engineering, Universidad de La Sabana, Chía, Cundinamarca, Colombia.

Marine-derived actinobacteria isolated from sponge and soft coral were screened for antibacterial activity against acne-related bacteria, specifically ATCC 14990, methicillin-resistant ATCC BAA44, and ATCC 6919. Cytotoxicity assays were performed on human dermal fibroblast (HDFa) and keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell lines to assess the safety profile of the extracts. Chemical characterization was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).

The present study explores the microbial community associated with the industrially important red seaweed Gracilaria dura to determine the diversity and biotechnological potential through culture and metagenomics approaches. In the first part of the investigation, we isolated and characterized 75 bacterial morphotypes, with varied colony characteristics and metabolic diversity from the wild seaweed. Phylogenetic analysis identified isolates in Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria, with Bacillus sp.
