Growth inhibitory activity has proven important in Qiufeng x Baiyu and Qingsong x Haoyue silkworm larvae. The consumption of mulberry leaves was reduced in both silkworm races while Qiufeng x Baiyu larvae showed the higher reduction in leaf consumption. From the results obtained, it was revealed that even at low concentrations of 400 mg/L of either Cr(III) or Cr(VI) ions, growth of Qiufeng x Baiyu and Qingsong x Haoyue was significantly depressed. Depression in relative growth index (RGI) and high death rate in both silkworm races indicated that the different concentrations of the two ions used caused their growth inhibitions. Through linear regression analysis, the EC50 (concentration of the compound that caused 50% reduction) was interpolated for both tested compounds. EC50 (mg/L) of Cr(III) ions in Qiufeng x Baiyu and Qingsong x Haoyue were 800 and 600 respectively. EC50 (mg/L) of Cr(VI) ions in Qiufeng x Baiyu and Qingsong x Haoyue was 600 and 316 respectively. According to the analysis of relative growth index, and an analysis of linear regression technique for measuring the growth of the silkworm races, it was indicated that the form of Cr affected growth rates, growth inhibition responses of the larvae, and toxicological effects. Thus, form and quantity of Cr accumulating in silkworms reared with contaminated leaves are likely to influence their population dynamics.

Electronic address:
Sericulture has become widespread globally, and the utilization of artificial diets produces a substantial quantity of silkworm excrement. Although silkworm excrement can be composted for environmentally friendly disposal, the potential utility of the resulting compost remains underexplored. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of this unique compost and screen for eco-beneficial microbes, providing a new perspective on microbial research in waste management, especially in sustainable agriculture.

Boron nitride nanosheets (BN NSs) have emerged as promising materials in a wide range of biomedical applications. Despite the extensive studies on these bio-nano interfacial systems, one critical concern is their toxicity, which is affected by a variety of factors, including size. This study aimed at assessing the relationship between BN NSs size and toxicity.

Naked pupa sericin and Naked pupa are two mutant strains of with extremely low or no fibroin production compared to the Qiufeng and Baiyu strains, both of which exhibit very high silk fibroin production. However, the molecular mechanisms by which long non-coding RNAs regulate fibroin synthesis need further study. In this study, we performed high-throughput RNA-seq to investigate lncRNA and mRNA expression profiles in the posterior silk gland of Qiufeng, Baiyu, Nd-s, and Nd silkworms at the third day of the 5th instar.

Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) is a major insect order including important pollinators and agricultural pests, however their microbiomes are little studied. Here, using next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based shotgun metagenomics, we characterize both the biodiversity and functional potential of gut microbiota of a lepidopteran model insect, the silkworm Bombyx mori. Two metagenomes, including the standard inbred strain Dazao (P50) and an improved hybrid strain Qiufeng × Baiyu (QB) widely used in commercial silk production, were generated, containing 45,505,084 and 69,127,002 raw reads, respectively.

The hybrid strain of the domesticated silkworm (Qiufeng × Baiyu) is one of the most popular commercial silkworm varieties in China. In this study, we reported its complete mitochondrial genome sequence for the first time. The 15,680 bp long genome contains 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes [PCGs], 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes) and 1 major non-coding A + T-rich region, with the typical arrangement found in Lepidoptera.
