Ultrastructural alterations in the liver and kidney of 3-month-old white sea bass, Latescalcarifer, after cadmium exposure were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). One group of fish was exposed to a cadmium concentration of 10 mg/L (acute) for 96 h in a static system, and another group was exposed to cadmium concentrations of 0.8 and 3 mg/L cadmium (subchronic) for 3 months in a recirculation closed system. Ultrastructural alterations observed in the hepatocytes included mitochondrial condensation, swelling, and lysis. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) showed dilation, fragmentation, and vesiculation. After subchronic exposure there were numerous large lipid droplets and abundant stored glycogen. Ultrastructural alterations observed in the proximal tubules of the kidney included nuclear degeneration, condensation, and massive swelling of the mitochondria; RER fragmentation and vesiculation. Disorganized brush borders and increased numbers of large hydropic vacuoles and lysosomes were also observed.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a hazardous endocrine disruptor released into the environment during the production of certain plastics used for covering of food and beverage cans. In this work, we examined the protective benefits of selenium (Se) against intestinal damage induced by BPA in male rats. Rats were distributed randomly into four groups.

Bt has been applied as a gene source for insect-resistant transgenic crops, which represents efficient control of insect pests. In this study, we evaluated the pesticidal specificity of one Bt maize strain, DBN9936, that expresses Cry1Ab protein in larvae. The results showed that this Bt maize is active against the younger larvae while causing a sublethal effect on older larvae.

The color and aroma of nectarines experience adverse effects from cutting, resulting in the fast senescence of fruit tissue. Therefore, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was used to treat postharvest nectarines before cutting, and its effect on the surface browning and aroma alteration were investigated. The results indicated that 1-MCP restrained the soluble quinone (SQC) accumulation in fresh-cut nectarines by regulating the peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities and the metabolism of phenolic compounds.

The residual concentration of pesticides and heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, selenium, lead, cadmium, and aluminum) was measured in the soil and the cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) liver from two localities at Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. The pesticide residues have taken the following pattern: chlorpyrifos > metalaxyl > piperonyl butoxide > thiophanate-methyl, in the soil. The residual concentration of pesticides was greater in the soil at Kafr El-Ashraf village (agricultural site) than at El-Qanayat city (garbage site) during the summer season of 2021 compared with the winter season of 2022.

Investigating the effects of drought stress and subsequent recovery on the structure and function of chloroplasts is essential to understanding how plants adapt to environmental stressors. We investigated Ctenanthe setosa (Roscoe) Eichler, an ornamental plant that can tolerate prolonged drought periods (40 and 49 days of water withdrawal). Conventional biochemical, biophysical, physiological and (ultra)structural methods combined for the first time in a higher plant with in vivo small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) were used to characterize the alterations induced by drought stress and subsequent recovery.
